Comics

So I used to love comics, but then I grew up and into other things. Girls. Beer. And my old copies of classics like Watchmen and Frank Miller's Ronin went right into storage.

Then a month back a friend introduced me to digital comics. Basically regular comics scanned as image files onto your computer. I quickly remembered how much I like laser eyes. And webbing. And *snikt*

1. What're some good comics, in your opinion? Recommendations?

2. If you read comics digitally, what program(s) do you use?

3. Again for digital comics, where do you usually buy em?

To get this ball rolling I'll throw down a few of mine so far:

1. Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan, 100 Bullets, other Vertigo titles. (does Marvel have anything analogous to Vertigo?)

2. My friend gave me a copy of a freeware program, ComicRack

3. *shrug* That's why I'm asking you

I've never heard of this 'ecomics', but I do like Wolverine and Spawn.

Maybe I should say "digital comics"? They're just regular comics scanned and uploaded for view on a computer, I assume.

You are probably aware that scanned comics which are from a liscensed series, without any payment going to the owners of that series is actually theft right?

Does this 'ecomics' do that? I wouldn't know. Like I said, I know nothing about that site. I was just assuming they did, because posting something like this about an illegal site is quite stupid.

Slow down both of you and please stop maligning my post. No one's suggesting anything illegal.

And thank you, Captain Bringdown.

Without getting into lengthy debate, yes, I'm quite aware that it's against the law to "reproduce without permission". Some sort of copyright infringment under US law, I assume. A criminal offense, nasty stuff... Which is why I specifically asked where to buy. But I suppose it's fair to include that at least in warning to others who don't.

Where to buy comics?

For individual issues, you can try ebay, though, as always, make sure to take a thorough look at the seller feedback comments and such. You can also google for the publisher -- if you don't know the publisher, google the comic title and there is probably a site somewhere that has it or an image of an issue cover (which usually prints the publisher's logo and title) -- they might either sell the individual issues or a trade paperback/graphic novel, a format that combines several issues into one soft-cover (usually) booklet (page sizes are not reduced, they are traditional comic-book size). You can find graphic novels on bookstore sites like Barnes and Noble and also on Amazon.

Comics I recommend? Well, that all depends a lot on personal preference... I find that the majority of my comics are published by Image, Top Cow (which sort of co-publishes with Image), Chaos! Comics (which, as a publisher, are many years dead), and Aspen Comics (but Top Cow published the original Fathom series. Speaking of Fathom, that is definitely a comic to check out! Artwork is fantastic, and it has a compelling storyline). Oh, and Devil's Due Publishing also published a few series I liked. The Top Cow website will let you read portions of their comics for free with their own comic viewer thingy. Aspen Comics has a previews section in their website that contains a few pages of new and old issues.

There are also webcomics, some of which are very professional. Webcomics do not, in general, require any special programs for viewing (I can think of only one instance where Adobe Shockwave was required); instead, the images are uploaded onto the web page, free for viewing. Many webcomics have update schedules, and most updates are not in bulk format (several pages at a time), but rather a single page. Update schedules may be daily, weekly, monthly, or irregular. There are many sites that host webcomic artists, such as Comicgenesis, Keenspot, and Drunk Duck. Other web artists have their own domain names. There are some sites that host webcomics, but charge a fee for the viewing (and some of that money then goes to the web artist); I've never subscribed to any such site, so I don't know the names of any comics hosted by such a site.

Try some of these:

http://www.misfile.com/

http://www.nuklearpower.com/

http://savepoint.comicgenesis.com/

unfortunately "save point" seems to be gone but I would still like to find the archives somewhere - I loved reading it.

I believe this is what he was referring to - online comics made by people, for people.
