ctd(crash2desktop) when entering falkreath area (not only city)

since you are pretty skilled maybe you can help me with my exotic(?) problem:

My Hardware:

CPU: Intel Q6600

RAM: 8 GB

VGA: NVidia Geforce GTX 580

OS: Win7 Enterprise x64

=> I should not experience any limitations

Drivers are up to date.

Thus not expecting that a mod causes the problem:

I use these Mods via nexus mod manager:

- ... i update this list when i am at home

Problem description:

skyrim immediately crashes without an error message as soon as i enter the area around Falkreach or a special dungeon (Embershard Mine).

This is reproducable and happens both by using quick travel(map) and walking into the area

to check whether this bug is created by the "history" of my char, i created a new one and had no trouble walking into the area and entering Falkreach

-> I suspect a conflict in the quest algorithm causing this ctd

Another indication is that i am unable to finish "old" quests e.g. killing bandits in the Embershard Mine (enter mine = ctd) or

"a night to remember" when i get teleported into the tavern where i met sam the 1st time->ctd

Maybe the quest which caused this mess is "a night to remember" itself:

i started the drinking contest (i guess) in falkrath tavern and woke up in Markath. Then collected the stuff and was told to visit Rorikstead.

I decided to continue this quest later and did most of the Markath quests, ... (40 levels/maybe 20h gametime)

Then I went to whiterun, met Ysolda persuaded her and decided to finish "a night to remember". I was wondering about Rorikstead but thought this should not cause much trouble.

I met Sanguine in his little wonderland and after finishing the dialogue with him, the game crashed the 1st time.

I loaded an old savegame which i created directly after waking up in Markath and had no problems to quick travel to Rorikstead -> no bug in the very old savegame.

Another try to fix this was using the console to reset/finish the quest "a night to remember" but resetting it did not seem to work and finishing it only teleports me into a ctd.

-> please help me because i feel in skyrim like living on a burning piece of paper which gets smaller and smaller while CTDs come closer :'(

Currently i am trying not to get new quests and finish all quests where it is possible. then i have a list of quests which could cause the trouble.

thanks for your help!

PS: if you want to check this bug or can analyze the savegame, I can also try to upload one of my savegames where the error exists.

It may not necessarily be the quest that is the issue. Look around here and do some CTD searches and you will see a lot of issues. Here is what I posted over in a Beth forum and it mirrors many other stories just like this. See if this sounds familiar.

I posted this in another thread but I will add it here to because it addresses the save file size issue. I believe it cannot be nailed specifically down due to so many variables. RAM, VRAM, processors, play style are probably all contributers to when people start experiencing this bloat issue. Each will be somewhat different but when it comes it will not stop.

I know I have gone to far when my save file size reaches almost 17 mgs. I travel to Understone Keep and will CTD immediately upon activating the door. No amounts of reboots will get that latest save to not have this happen.

If I go back to a previous hard save that does not have this certain amount of bloat I can enter and exit this area without issue. 4 times now I have gone back to a previous hard save, different save each time, in the 15.6 - 15.9 mg range and replayed the game. I would then take a different path each time. I would do completely different quests and explore different areas. All the time fast traveling back and forth to Understone Keep to see if I can still get in that world space. Regardless of the path I traveled as soon I progressed enough in the game to get my save at the 16.7 - 16.8 mg range I will get the CTD in this spot everytime. If I just continue on and say I will just go to that area any more, as I progress further I will start to get more CTD's in other places. The last time I quit I had about 4 areas that I could repeatably get CTD's at no matter what. It just gets worse as you continue on. This totally sucks.

I basically have been twiddling my thumbs waiting for Beth to either patch this, and correct this issue, or at least acknowledge it so we know that it is at least recognized. Yet we wait.

I loved this game and I took it all in. I traveled slowly through the world. I could easily spend 5 or 6 hours in a single dungeon or building doing recon and setting traps when I recognized NPC patterns. I never just took a mace and bashed my way though in 15 minutes. Because of this I have over 350 hours of gametime on my character and have just finished speaking with the Greybeards. I have a 70's level character and still have most of the main quest to do. I have done nothing with the DB questline or the civil war. I still have at least 30% of the areas to discover. I took great pains to avoid activating undiscovered areas taking the long way around each one. I figured a quest would take me there and I never wanted to lock an area into a lower level. For all this patience and time I spent really trying to enjoy all the game had to offer, I get left with a basically unplayable game, without any word that it may even be fixed at any point in the future. If it doesn't get addressed the only recourse is to start a new character and just bash my way through it as fast as possible. Turning this wonderfully crafted game into just another RAGE type mindless basher game. Nothing wrong with that mind you, and I enjoy those games too, but this game is on another level than that. Clearly far more has been put into it.

As you will see you may be experiencing a very similar issue. If that is the case we can only sit and wait for either Beth to address it or some talented modder to come to the rescue.

Hi and thanks for the answer, yeah it sounds pretty similar.

Max savegamesize is around 7 MB so I am not sure if it has to do something with it but the problem description sounds very familiar.

I also sent a message to Bethesda today but they did not yet get an answer.

thanks so far, lets hope to get this nice game fixed soon ;)
