seanxx
Are they? Lockpicks availability is pretty widespread and even on lower levels I can unlock anything i come across if i have a healthy supply of lockpicks. Sure a master lock might take 5-10 lockpicks when im only in the 20-30 lockpicking range but so be it, no worries. Only Treasure Hunter and Golden Touch are really worth it but you have to waste 3 perks just to get there. worth it?
Lachdonin
They are worth is something as an afterthought, if you don't want to put a lot of effort into picking locks. Unbreakable is also good since you have to throw away the Skeleton Key if you want to complete the Theives Guild quest line.
Dukkah
I dont think they are. Honestly, that tree and pickpocketing confound me as to why Beth would keep them after getting rid of so many other stats. But I can usually pick a master lock in under ten picks. You just have to get used to a really light touch so they don't break too soon. Of course, as u said. Lockpicks are EVERYWHERE in this game, as opposed to even Oblivion (where, as I recall, you could only buy them from the thieves guild). There just doesn't seem to be any motivation for wasting your perks on such a lackluster tree.
faifh
I made me an enchanted set of locksmithing, 4 times +40% Lockpicking. Since it was all clothes, it was only 2 extra weight to carry around. Made even masterlocks not hard without a single perk in that tree. Only was a little tedious to put on the set for a lock and to replace it with your dragonbones again as soon it was open. I also put +carryweight on the same set since free double enchants, so at the end of the dungeon I could put on that clothes and piggyback a lot of stuff. If you want to min/max a power-play-char, the tree is quite a waste IMHO. Might be fit to roleplay a masterthief tough. Sverdar
Well, I'm not sure, if it's just too easy or we are just too good, but I haven't "wasted" a single perk on the lock-pick-tree. I can open a master-chest (sure it takes some time, but it does work) without any perk on this tree and it takes not more than 20 picks ;)So, I don't think they are a waste, but I also don't think they are that usefull :P
Dukkah
Also, why is there no longer an alteration spell to unlock doors? We get useless telekinesis, but we can't bend the metal in a lock? I call BS!

I call BS! magic to open a lock? you are standing there with a sword, axe, mace in your hand in front of a wooden door or chest and you first choose to pick the lock and then you would use magic? I call Double BS! :)
Feanoro
Oh yeah? What about them dwemer doors/gates/chests? Those won't break if you use brute force on them.
faifh
Oh yeah? What about them dwemer doors/gates/chests? Those won't break if you use brute force on them. Would be nice if the game would make a difference to that. Brute-Forcing wooden chests and doors would be a nice addition. The former breaking any potions inside, and both making a ton of noise - alterting anything else left alive. But also, the dwemer could build automatons in the complexity to full automatic battle machines, but no locks that could not be tricked by a simple small metal stick? Seriously... EDIT: I take that back, there are a set of (mostly quest relevant) locks that cannot be picked. Edited January 11, 2012 by faifh
