So are there actually lesser Aedra around?

Interesting. I always felt that it was more likely that the Argonians crossed over from Akavir than the Khajit, due to their geographic location in the east of Tamriel (Akavir lies across the eastern sea), their beastly nature (all the races of Akavir are beastmen), and their pronounced cultural differences from the rest of the continent. The Khajit, by contrast, do seem better integrated into the social/political/religious structure of Tamriel, and their geographic location would indeed suggest an early relationship with the mer.

There are some mythic indications (Such as the Monomyth) that all races on Nirn originated on Tamriel, then migrated elsewhere, only to return later. Except the Hist, of course, who don't really get out much (Being trees and all). a lot of the mythic base relies on the idea that the Aedra battled Lorkhan after they realised his trechery. This battle is what caused Lorkhan to directly create Man, as the lesser Aedra had become Aldmer and formed the armies of the divines. Of course, thats all very convoluted and even within a magic filled world, mythic.

That said, i know that the Akiviri invaded in the 2nd era, and that Argonians existed before that. Thats not to say the Akiviri did not come to Tamriel during the Mereithic era, or the First era, but we don't have enough information about that. Whatever the case, the Argonians are intimately bound to the Hist, to the point where a Hist can cause hundreds of them to stand there and be slaughtered by Umbriel.

It said somewhere in the lore that the Argonians can range wildly from almost passing for a man, to being almost completely bestial, based on how much physical contact they've had with the Hist in their childhood.

I don't know its really vague about that part. For all we know the Argonians could have been a lost race of Man or Mer or came into contact with the Hist.
