jojogojogojo
On my first playthrough i joined the stormcloaks hoping the campaign against the imperials would lead to a large field battle with at least a couple hundred npcs lined up but was sorely disappointed when the battles ended up being just about 10 stormcloaks running at the huge walled town of Whiterun and dying while a couple more spawned behind the front and ran up...LAME, i guess Mount and Blade and the Total War series have spoiled me. I don't know if its possibly to even do this with skyrim but this is a dream mods form so... Battles could be enlarged by having special npcs meant only for large battles with lower poly models and all that to maximize the amount of npcs in a battle Being able to start and command a warband in battle (hold ground, charge, use melee weapons etc) and command legionares and stormcloaks once u move up in rank A group of soldiers acting as a unit rather than a mob. Formations, shield wall, marching, tesudo for imperials  Larger battles with battle lines. ranged stay back, heavy infantry holding the line, and CAVALRY flanking from either side Imperial legionares should be the most organized and least likely to break lines, bandits would attack as a mob and stormcloaks somewhere in between Spears and pikes! terzho
A mount and blade scale battle will cause skyrim the crash......mount and blade was made extremely low end so it could handle the battles. However what you want has kind of been done in fallout new vegas so it is proablly possible but not as big as mount and blade.
Bismarck
The Skyrim engine is definitely not suited for large scale battles (Warband can handle 1000 NPCs if your computer is good enough). Besides, the TES combat system, especially on horse, is very primitive and even the best modders will most likely not be able to add standard medieval combat tactics like couched lances. What about an alternative? There is an old SNES game called "Ogre Battle - The March of the Black Queen" which really impressed me with its mix of RTS and RPG. In this game, you create small squads consisting of max. 5 units. Beasts count as 2 units but are often more powerful. Ogre Battle has lots of classes and characters can switch classes if they meet the stat requirements. There are knights, paladins, clerics, valkyries, dragons, hellhounds, hawkmen, dragons and many more. Now imagine something like that in Skyrim. You can create a small squad by adding the classes you like and you run around killing hostile squads, conquering/defending bases, recruiting new units and so on. Especially when the multiplayer version is released, such a mod would be interesting. Thieves sneak around trying to gather intel or to ambush the enemy, clerics heal and protect their friends, fighters simply mow everything down and mages burn their enemies to death and so on.
