Specific/random CTDs

After recently upgrading my PC I reinstalled Oblivion and got the 1.2 patch... a couple on newer versions of my mods and started playing. cue ramdom CTDs... eventually i leveled up... cue CTD on exiting the "Spend your 3 points screen".

I've done some reading on this site and UESP... and that got me more confused... my wife reinstalled Oblivion on her PC (not upgraded yet) and now she's getting random CTDs alot more frequently than I am... about every 5-10 minutes. Sometimes i swear they CTD in sympathy of each other!.

We use the same mods but have differnet pcs... I use OMM... she does not...

I've read about load orders but I'm not sure where to start, this is the current order below, but I have tried putting all the DLCs to load first... no noticable change.

Recently I have seen a thread that claims that turning off your screensaver might cut down on CTDs. also, a well known problem is ANY program running in the background that tries to do something can cause CTDs - one that I have seen a lot is an older version of the HP printer drivers. (Why does a printer need to call home every day to check for updates?)

Anti virus, anti spyware , Adobe, Java and any other program that is in background and may try to grab a few CPU cycles can cause CTDs.

Looking at your mod list, I had a significant reduction in crashes when I removed DLC Horse Armor from mine. There are several bugs in the Official Bethesda Horse armor mod and because it is a Bethesda program, the mod community can't (legally) fix it.

You don't say if you use OBMM, I recommend it as it can usually fix load order problems and can find some incompatibilities but it does seem to find a lot that don't cause problems.

I don't think we will ever get rid of all of the crashes, Oblivion is just too complex a game, and there are some mods that will not play nice with others. But we try to keep crashes to a minimum and save often.

Another thing to considder is that you have so many mods being used, but only 1gb of RAM. RAM is needed for the game to load all those mods up. Not quite sure why it only crashes when you level up, but it might be because that is when a fairly large chunk of information is being taken in, and filling up the RAM. For whatever reason Oblivion does not seem to handle unloading of RAM well, and once it fills up the game usually crashes. You might want to try either disabling some of the mods that add alot of things, or require additional processes (like ones using OBSE), or upgrading your ram to 2gb.

Thanks guys... and yes I do use Oblivion Mod Manager, if that's what you meant from OBMM. I will try playing with the load orders and how many mods I have running. I tried running it without the Horse armour and that still CTD'd unfortunately.
