There are several possible causes of this error.

If you downloaded an early Shivering Isles patch, then you are the victim of a Bethesda mistake. You must reinstall Oblivion to get rid of the problem caused by the old patch - It will no longer recognize any new patches.

You must use the proper language version of the patch. The language must be the same or it will not work properly. Note that there are 2 English versions, UK and US and they are different. - If you have a UK English version of Oblivion and try to apply a US English patch, it gets confused and will not patch properly.

If you are using the D2D (Direct 2 Drive legal internet download)version - sorry about that. D2D is a COPY PROTECTED download and does not support patches! I recommend calling D2D and expressing your displeasure. But I doubt it will do any good. Maybe they will come out with a patchable version, but don't hold your breath.

If you are using a cracked version. You are a cheapskate and need to purchase a legal version. (But NOT D2D) Its a great game and the makers deserve to be paid for their work. If they don't make any money then why should they bother making a PC version of TESV?

When you have reinstalled Oblivion, go to the Bethesda site and download the latest patch - ONLY ONE!. if you have Shivering Isles, ONLY download the SI patch. If you are not using SI, ONLY download the NEWEST Oblivion patch. With the newest patch you do not need the older patches because they are included, along with several patches that fix problems caused by the earlier patches.
