Drop the magnesium in the glass of water.

At room temperature, even magnesium ribbon won't do anything in water unless it's already on fire. The dust can be explosive when wet, but a detonator is required.

No. Magnesium hydroxide is produced, not magnesium oxide.

 

try pure potassium

While you're at it, substitute the water for 3 M sulfuric acid. That would also make the magnesium reaction a bit more aggressive, if you could get it to start up in the first place.

I drink on the opposite side of a glass of water.

 

Did you know, and this is just a theory. The reason why we hiccup trased back to when our species had gills, and it's a gill reflex. When you watch a fish take in water; it's the same as a hiccup. This is what the Scientists think, but there not to sure.
