Help with an old gmax tutorial

About six years ago amycus posted this incredibly helpful guide to porting meshes from Dragon Age 2 to Dragon Age Origins, which I'm attempting to follow in Gmax. Unfortunately I'm a little stuck, and the original thread is so far out of date that I doubt I'd get much joy from resurrecting it

I'm stuck on step 13, at the top of the second post. I've followed the steps as laid out exactly, several times, to no avail - every time, I press delete and either nothing happens or both meshes I'm working on disappear. I also note that I'm never asked to move the DA2 mesh's UV map back into position? Shouldn't I do that at some point?

The obvious thing to do is to manually detach the meshes and then delete the extra one, but I can't find a way to detach them - the detach button greys out, and once they're attached I can only select one of them as the other seems to meld into it. I don't suppose there's anyone out there who can help me understand where I'm going wrong? I'm a complete beginner and I really have no idea what I'm doing here at all - and since this is basically a hack, YouTube videos aren't helping much.
