thesapien
Another thing is that magic is extremely hard to use as a beginner character. Magic levels way to slowly and has total s*** for spells. I couldn't do crap with magic till I got midas magic. Well, I dunno about this last part. I mean, yes, if you're not spending perks in destruction, then it's mostly for prepping enemies for your main attack or for aggravating more distant opponents. But once you start getting perks in magic, there is a lot you can do without ever needing a weapon or armor. Still, you meant for the beginning of the game, so I'll back up, and point out that there's not a whole lot you can do in the beginning just using any one style. Shoot, taking on three wolves at once with just a shield and sword is frustrating when you can help yourself a lot by setting them all on fire at once, after which, your weapon then deals greater damage to burning targets. Just saying. Acutally, I don't know what I'm saying. What was the question?
FordPerfect
Sword and Board is the best (most powerful I mean) combo IMO. You get the shield charge - just block and sprint to knock everything in your path flying. Shield bash to interrupt enemies attacks (very effective against pesky mages). Elemental aegis - 50% damage reduction from magic. Block arrows. Perform deadly counter attacks while blocking (when time slows make a counter attack that kills all but the toughest enemies with a single hit). Magic, compared to the other builds, is incredibly borked and I currently play a pure mage (no weapons or armour) on master.

You mean in melee or close combat, right? You're also not counting using the environment, like a doorway that a giant spider can't fit through. To be completely open and maybe embarrassed, I've never personally given the sword and shield a real go. But in fighting such enemies, well, they're actually like down there on the least of my worries. If say I'm fighting 3 bandits and their tank guys comes closest first while their rangers hang back, I usually just keep moving so the arrows miss, give the tanker a shout, some freeze or fire, hit him with a sword and dagger, rinse and repeat while shout recharges; important to keep moving fast often sheathing weapons and using stamina to run. But in close quarters with not much space or anywhere to backout, yes, indeed, those tank guys kill me.
Feanoro
Bandits are manageable at start but if you're less than lvl 20ish and run into Draugr Deathlords with 2h weapons and shouts you're kinda done for. Thing with blocking is, if you put perks in it at the beginning it'll be amazingly useful, but later on there's really not much that can hurt you and you regret using your perks for block. Come to think of it, those Draugr Deathlord rangers still piss me off even at lvl 61 on Master. They just fus ro da the s*** outta me sending me flying across a whole room in a corkscrew motion, and while I'm on the ground trying to get up they pound me with ebony arrows from their ebony bows. Not pleasant:(
