TESVAL or SkyBoost? Your Thoughts...

Simple question, looking for feedback. Which of the two would your recommend and why. I have read through the comments for both mods but still don't have a clear idea of which one is superior. Both SkyBoost and TESVAL offer to do the same thing. Some user report more stability with TESVAL while others suggest SkyBoost offers better performance improvements. I have tried both, and honestly can't tell the difference between the two, although I do notice FPS and lag improvements while using these mods. What are your thoughts?

Between TESVAL & SkyBoost, which one offers:

  • Superior Performance Improvements
  • Better Stability
  • More User/Author Support

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I can only relate my own experience...

I tried them both, I saw no performance difference between TESVal and Skyboost.

However, I use TESVal because it runs as an SKSE plugin, unlike SkyBoost which has its own hooks.

My personal experience with SkyBoost is that it offers a significantly larger performance increase compared to TESVAL, as it scores about 10% better in terms of FPS when compared to TESVAL when compared in highly taxing areas of the game. Its stability appears to be equivalent to TESVAL and I've had no problems running it. It's hard to judge support, however, as neither mod has actually been around for a long period of time.

I would say not to worry about either one. Neither creates a save game dependency. Use whichever is more desirable to you. I find SkyBoost runs better than TESVAL so I use SkyBoost. If TESVAL starts to outclass SkyBoost I'll switch back to using it. There's no reason for favor one over the other and no reason to be concerned about SkyBoost conflicting with SKSE, as they use different hooking methods that aren't likely to conflict.

Superior Performance Improvements:

Skyboost without a doubt. In the most taxing place in Markarth I could benchmark from, over a 60 second fraps benchmark identical conditions (only radom factor is npcs wandering and I find this has a negligible impact), I got a 30-something percent improvement in average fps with TESVAL v3 and a 46% increase in average fps with Skyboost r3, both over a vanilla fps benchmark. Skyboost also has a v4 under public beta right now, with people experiencing further fps improvements.

Please note that my test was designed to aggravate CPU limitations. In many less taxing situations (Dragonsreach steps) you might not see a significant difference between Skyboost r3 and TESVAL v3.

Better Stability

TESVAL and Skyboost r3 give me the same stability.

More User/Author Support

Skyboost hands down; TESVAL was more of a proof of concept, with Skyboost a project under continuing development. The author has posted tests for people to run on their machines to see which direction(s) he should take further optimization and he has even helped individual users with their bugs that could not be replicated by other people.

I greatly favor SkyBoost but right now I'm not sure this is true. SkyBoost has a lot of posts pertaining to users having miscellaneous problems. A good amount may be due to installation problems but likely not all. Regardless, I would still say SkyBoost is the best choice... if it does cause instability you can just switch to TESVAL, but if it doesn't it'll offer much better performance.

It is true because I said they "give me."

I would say that a large majority of the people complaining about Skyboost were doing so because of other mods, failure to read, misinstallation, and other user errors. Every time I look at the Skyboost mod page there are several new replies from people who clearly failed to follow directions.

Either way, as Sunnie says, best to test them both and choose for yourself.

I did.

Well I thank you guys for your input. I made the switch from TESVAL to SkyBoost. Honestly I am not seeing much of a difference performance wise, so I guess if I have stability issues, I'll just switch back... I am eager to see if the upcoming 1.4 update will incorporate any of these "fixes"

One other thought. Are you SkyBooster's running R3 or have you tried R4...? Issues?
