What upgrades should I get to play Fallout 4?

Recommended Posts

Hi friends! So I've decided the time has come to upgrade my computer, as it's beginning to run a little behind current games, including Fallout 4. Here is my rig:

Processor: Intel Core i7-3770k CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.5GHz

Memory: 16GB RAM

Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, 4GB Memory

It runs Fallout 4 and other games decently, but the framerate drops in some of the more graphics-intensive areas, especially those added by mods. I also have a lot of framerate stuttering in Skyrim and a game called Star Citizen (if anyone's familiar with that). So, my current plan is to double the RAM and buy a juicier graphics card.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Are there any other upgrades I need to consider?

What's your motherboard model and PSU and monitors model and native result ion? Just to make sure you can drive what you add.

It's fine.

You can upgrade the 680 for the 1070 or the 1080. It probably won't help in Skyrim, but should in FO4.

Your CPU is fine, but you're running it wrong - the 3770K is meant to be overclocked (the K literally stands for that). It should do 4.2 GHz effortlessly by simply entering BIOS and setting all its turbo ratios to 42. That's 20% more speed you're not using.

Hi

You don't need a new CPU. My old i7 2600k had no problem running the game at 4k resolution with a GTX 980 ti.

The GTX 680 4gb is a really good card for 1080 resolution gaming but it is not up to things like ENB & Reshade.

I replaced my GTX 680 with a GTX 970 & that was a mistake. Only the 980 was a good replacement for the 680.

So I would say your minimum upgrade would be a 1060 6gb for 1080 resolution gaming & a 1070 if you are thinking about going 1440 resolution or 144hz 1080 gaming in the near future.

Also Fallout 4 being an open world game benefits from being on a SSD.

My old i7 2600k rig I built in 2011 has a GTX 1080 that runs both Fallout 4 & Skyrim SE at 3440 X 1440 resolution at 60fps. Both games run smooth.
