D35C1V11
I'm used to using Photoshop for textures but I cannot justify what Adobe wants for current versions so I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give me on other options out there. I dont mind spending some money but I have no interest in a subscription where I do not own the program after paying for it. Right now I have the trial of Paintshop Pro X9 and Ive got the Nvidia plugin working but having some trouble figuring out file structure for adding textures/patterns as brush presets like I had in PS. It's also hard to think of everything you might need to do until you actually need it. So I'm not sure if this is enough for what I want to do.âI'm open to using something like GIMP or PAINT.NET but free is usually free for a reason. Any help and feedback is much appreciated. Also, I only need it to do stuff related to game textures only, I don't need to do any photo editing or anything else really. Thanks
thumbincubation
I am becoming a bigger fan of GIMP with each use. It has a free .dds ...addon?...so you can work textures, and is overall very easy to use. I say that coming from being comfortable in photoshop and having no GIMP experience. The main thing I had to re-learn was moving textures into other images. In photoshop, I used to be able to highlight a piece of a texture (such as a spot in armor, that I wanted to replace with something else) then drag the empty selection over into another image, copy, and paste it back into the original. It would seat itself cleanly into the originally-highlighted area. With GIMP, I haven't been able to drag the empty selections, so what I end up doing is highlighting the base texture, as with photoshop. Then I'd go to the overlay, usually a block of chainmail or some type of fabric texture, select all, copy, and go back to the base texture and "paste into." It centers the overlay into it, that way. Then I do it again, for whatever else I want to change. Otherwise, it's been a great program for me, does everything I need it to do, and allows me to make normal maps right from the image I'm working on. I'd definitely suggest giving it a try. For a free editor, it's nothing short of amazing, to me.
OutLaw666
GIMP! II'm using it for years and did all my textures with it. You can simply drag and drop textures into gimp and work with different layers that way. I always use the eraser to make parts that i don't need transparent and afterwards combine the layers, (always use "combine and cut to the size of the base layer" ((or however that function is named in english or your language))!). then export it as .dds. Lisselli
GIMP has been the go-to image program for awhile. Photoshop was right up there until Adobe made it subscription only.
steve40
GIMP is not bad for a free editor, but if you are used to Photoshop and Paintshop Pro you may find GIMP to be very unintuitive to use until you get used to it.
