Low fps problem

Recommended Posts

Hi, my English isn't the best. Here are my specs.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel Pentium E5400 @ 2.7 GHz

6.00 GB RAM

AMD Radeon HD 6870

I play on medium settings in 1080p with AA and AF off but am stuck at 20-25fps. Will overclocking my CPU fix my problem? I have never done it before. My goal is at least 40fps.

Grab SkyBoost if you haven't.

Even if you do, as the above user notes, you need a better processor. You could probably flip open a monitor and see that your video card will barely be used at all with a dual core. Mine gets 15% - 35% on Battlefield 3/Skyrim because I've got a dual core 2.4 GHz system. Grab an i5 if you want to actually use most of your shiny video card.

Stable CPU overclock will help you in a situation like this since you're probably entirely limited by your CPU. Getting a boost of 200 Mhz netted me an increase of around 40% more FPS, something like 22 -> 30. I think you can grab a quad-core i5 3.3 GHz off of Newegg right now for around $200, it's what I intend to get when I've got change to spare.

yups thats definitely bottleneck, my best suggestion is lower your resolution and tuning your setting until it give you average fps that you want. Lucky that you can still run with low fps, as for me always got ctd with no error even tho i it play quite smooth with my comp

Before shelling out for a new CPU please be sure to check to see if your motherboard will support what you want to put in it. Most companies will not refund for CPU chips for any reason.

If your new super duper CPU doesn't work in your old Mother Board, you are out the cash.

Edit: more info, your current processor is a socket LGA775 or Socket T compatible chip. Look here for compatible chips that will fit that socket. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_socket

Now, just because it will fit, does not mean the motherboard will support it - so do some homework on what your MB will support.

Sometimes you can find good deals on MB & CPU combinations at online retailers like Tigerdirect or Newegg. Be sure to read the customer reviews as sometimes good deals are a way for a retailer to clean out slow selling merchandise - maybe there is a reason that particular MB is selling slow? :whistling:

Thank you for the replies everyone. I downloaded Skyboost, used the performance tips, and run Gamebooster for a pretty stable 5fps increase now. I will read more about overclocking and post again if I have questions.

@bben46 I will keep my eyes peeled for any particular deals going on. I'm new to computers so I appreciate your advice.
