Left4Shred
I'm making a meme related texture as a joke and plan to make serious ones in the future but kinda just wanted to use this as an introduction for myself and I'm stumped and in need of assistance. I know there's something I'm missing, I know there's something I'm not doing correctly. So I've decided to come here looking for help. I use Photoshop CS.5 and have past experience with it back when I used to do photography and I have the Nvidia DDS tool and Normal Map Plugin. I've been looking online for awhile and just can't find anything that's helped me and I know that, once I figure it out, I'm going to feel really stupid. Here's some screenshots of my work Texture without the serrated edge added Front In Game Back In Game This is literally my first attempt ever at texturing and I'm just in need of help and I can make a little go a long way so even if it's a tid bit of information I'd welcome it. I hate bothering the community with things that might be trivial to many but I just really don't know what to do. I really do hate to ask so many questions but I guess I'm just not sure what to search for on google. That, or I'm just completely overlooking something but I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong with the normal maps or I'm completely leaving something out (do I need to make a diffuse layer or a specular layer). Feel free to ask anything you need to know that could help you help me if need be. This includes more screenshots and I can take videos with fraps if you need as well. This is the kind of help I'd cook a guy a steak for. So thanks in advanced for any help that anyone gives. I'm going to go back and try working on this some more until I pass out. throttlekitty
Are you by chance using that same texture in the second texture slot? It looks like whatever you're using as a normal map is very skewed. Look into using the normal map filter that came with the nVidia dds tools. Left4Shred
Are you by chance using that same texture in the second texture slot? It looks like whatever you're using as a normal map is very skewed. Look into using the normal map filter that came with the nVidia dds tools. That's what I use. And yes it's the same texture, although the one from the ingame version had been resized to 512x512. Still used it though since it looks the same in game with the high res version as well. I think I'm just not making the normal map correctly. EDIT: I'm going to go screencap it just to show you what it looks like with the high res copy. Should have done that in the first place, but the results pretty much teh same. Edited January 22, 2012 by Left4Shred

Also, i'm aware of the sides of the coin, just haven't re done it yet.
throttlekitty
Ok, so the normals do look correct, I guess that first shot was just throwing me off. I would tone down on the specular, also make it a bit darker towards the base of each engraved area - this would add some depth and readability. throttlekitty
Easy route would be invert selection on your engraved shape layer and paint in some dark areas.
Left4Shred
Alright, thanks so much for all the help. I'll see if I can't get it to look right now and come back with my results.
