ryanelfa
Firstly, apologies if there is a thread on this bug already, I couldnt find one thats why I am creating this. Looking for assistance with a quest, I have currently finished the quest with the companions when kill all the witches from the Den.Once you return to Whiterun you find the camp has been attacked by Silver hand, two Companions are outside with silverhand bodies beside them. When I go into the main room to talk to any of the companions I either get that they are busy at the moment or the only thing they talk about is the general... why did you join the companions etc. Hoping someone can assist as I want to continue with the Companions but cant work out how, each time I go back to the companions area in Whiterun it is always the same.I also hope the solution is not to restore from a previous save as it has been a while with this issue and I have progressed a fair way on other quests since then. Look forward to hearing from useful advice. Thank you
chanchan05
Did you do the quest for the Winterhold helm? Or have you not? The problem is that if the Jarl of Winterhold gave you that quest in the same place the Companions quest was supposed to be. If you haven't finished that quest yet, you MUST finish that quest without killing anyone in the fort. If you have finished that quest and killed all the baddies, you have to use console commands to resurrect the 3 bosses, but that does not always work. chanchan05
From the WiKi WORKAROUND This bug can be caused by the Helm of Winterhold quest being in the same location as Purity of Revenge. Bug was encountered on 1/6/12 and worked around on the same day by reloading to a save that existed before starting Blood's Honor. Make sure that the Helm of Winterhold, if located at Driftshade Refuge, has been completed WITHOUT killing anyone inside. For best chance of fix working, do not attack anyone and only take the Helm of Winterhold from the chest. A glitch also occurs where this quest cannot be started if the player has already cleared Driftshade Refuge. If you have already cleared it, then enter the Driftshade Refuge dungeon, go into the console and type "prid 0006a99c" and then "resurrect" (no quotes). After that, leave Driftshade Refuge and type in the console "setstage c05 10". You can now go to Vilkas and start the quest. If neither of previous idead didn't help, try waiting 32 days. You have to do this before finishing the quest Blood's Honor. Waiting will reset Driftshade Refuge and you can start the quest Purity of Revenge. There might not be any Silver Hands inside the Refuge, but the shards of Wuuthard are on the table. If driftshade refuge has been cleared completely, (including the leader), before Blood's Honor was started, wait approximately 32 in game days, (can be via wait), before collecting the witch heads. Then complete the quest as normal. This will reset the next dungeon and Purity of Revenge will trigger as normal. Rooker75
The wikis (wikia and uesp both) are a little confused on this. This bug apparently happens if you clear Driftshade for any reason; it doesn't matter whether it was for a quest or not. In my case, the Beacon of Meridian (part of the quest to get Dawnbreaker sword) was located in Driftshade. Popular place apparently. Waiting 32 days does work around the bug though. It doesn't matter if you've already killed the witches, so long as you don't enter Jorrvaskr. Find an autosave and then go wait somewhere for 32 days. chanchan05
Actually, it was great that I still haven't taken the Winterhold helm in my playthrough when I encountered this bug, so what I did was bought all the health/stamina potions in all the places I could, then went to driftshade and ran through the entire dungeon without killing anyone, ran to the chest, took the helm before the three guys were on me, ran out the door and straight back to Winterhold. LOL.
