geronimodennis
imagine if skyrim can dynamically load exterior place like cities, buildings and dungeons like the world of Gothic and 2 world two. skyrim would be much much more fun
faifh
I can understand why houses and dungeons are separate maps beside the world map, since they contain tons of items that would be painful to dynamically load the cell. I just don't quite get, if they really gain enough for what it is worth to not have the major towns in the world map as well, similar why dungeons are almost always 3 maps instead of 1 larger. To be fair for other games you mentioned (going back to dungeon siege which had no load screens): they hardly have nearly as much items lying around as the standard TES house/dungeons. EDIT: Maybe its the amount of NPCs that require major cities to be seperate maps to be still performative... hmmm... Sarimae
Just a guess : balanced Monsters : Let's say you are travelling down a Cave, 1st Part of Dungeon, you are level 5. In the first Part, there are Level 3-5 Mobs, in 2nd part there are level 4-6 Mobs, and in the third part Level 8-10 Mobs. Now you find it's too hard to get through part 2 , come back later, hit 2ndpart again, ooook...got through it easily, 3rd Part...damn. they trained aswell ;) that's just a rough guess, but it would explain for me, why. Also, the loottables alter , of course, then.
geronimodennis
i hope creation kit will give us full control to alter the map and let someone who's good enough to merge the exterior cell from the actual world map.
PsYchotic666Joker
Lets hope there's another Open Cities mod, just like Oblivion, Morrowind had the right idea :)
NorthWolf
Cities would be rough to dynamically load due to high concentrations of NPCs. I agree Morrowind was nice but NPCs in Morrowind were much more static and there were no physics objects to fling about.
ModelV
RAGE had it right.
LoofSquared
Most dungeons could not be done into exterior world. Why? Engine limitations. The world is basically a surface one can lower or rise, but not mold tunnels into nor move sideways. A basic "tower climbing" outdoor dungeon would indeed be possible though, but you can forget the caves. Now why would they not have the cities in the main exterior space? Yes, it takes quite a pile of memory to process them, and also, the engine can handle only so much NPCs without starting to mess the AI, though most probably open cities kind of a mod will be there at some point. Now what about buildings? Simple, Bethesda has yet to solve how not to make it rain inside.
Deleted3463132User
This mod sounds awesome. But would this not cause slow-downs, Stability problems as the game/engine would have to load more at the same time. And Isn't the content in the cells created when you enter. Which is why the world is random, as when you enter the loading screen it is dynamically/randomly creating content?Correct me on this
a7x5631
Skyrim was going to use the open city mod concept (was officially announced right after the trailer came out and was probably taken out later on). The consoles just can't handle it. Plus the load times for them would be even more horrendous.
