Custom face texture problems

Aaalrighty. I'm still pretty new to messing around with files, so I'm probably going to ask some newb questions, but my google-fu doesn't seem to be strong enough to help me.

 

luicianshepard was kind enough to fulfill a request for me, which was making a texture edit to the Valkyr face texture to add a bullet scar on the forehead. (So, this is not a LooksMenu-applied scar, but one baked into the basefemalehead_d texture file.) But upon testing, we both encountered the same problem: the face and neck turn dark brown, the eyebrows disappear, as do any LooksMenu-applied scars. reference pictures:

I should go ahead and say I'm not using the HQ texture pack, so the resolution problem is not the one I'm having. If I replace basefemalehead_d with the original one from Valkyr, her face shows back up as per normal. It's definitely something to do with the edit, but I genuinely have no idea what.

 

Things that I've tried:

> Copying the scar layer from the PSD over onto a copy of the original Valkyr face texture, to see if the base layer was corrupted or something. I have no idea if that's even a thing, but I figured it'd be worth trying since it wouldn't be hard to do. No luck.

> Google brought me to this old thread, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to try that fix mentioned in the last post. It didn't change anything.

 

My last guess is that it has something to do with the basefemalehead_n and _s files, but I... genuinely have no idea what those files are, or if it's even possible for them to be causing this bug, or, if they are, how to go about editing them to fix the brown face.
