Dragons Without the Dragonborn?

I've noticed several posts about alternate-realities or alternate starts, most of which disable the Main Quest. I'm all for this idea and have started a game based on the Bandit Theanna save game. While I don't really care about pursuing life as the Dovahkiin... I do however really like the dragon fights. Especially with the Deadly Dragons mod.

Does anyone know if the following things are possible (before the CK is released)...?

  1.
  2. DISABLE the main quest. And...
  3. Retain dragon encounters. And...
  4. Retain Shout use/acquisition.

Yes, if I wanted to I could just do the Main quest until after killing the dragon outside Whiterun. But where's the immersion in that?

Well you can do the main quest until you get the quest to be summoned to high hrothgar, then not go up there at all ever.

I thought about that, but -- maybe I'm just being anal about it -- I'd rather not have any NPCs calling my character Dragonborn or anything like that. Let my PC be oblivious to it all except that there are occasionally giant flying lizards attacking people. :) I imagine this should be a snap with the CK.... but who knows when that'll come out. It doesn't get much more like "the end of January" than it does now.

Removing every instance of the word "Dragonborn" from all the dialogue in the game would be... problematic. It might be possible, but your odds of finding someone with the patience and dedication for the job are minimal, unless you feel like doing it yourself.

That being said, I always thought it would be fun to release a mod called "Can't someone else do it?" that involved escaping Helgen with a third companion, who turns out to be the Dragonborn. The main quest would slowly progress on its own, without the player doing anything. Every so often the player would run across the Dragonborn, either out in the wild, in a dungeon, or talking to one of the MQ NPCs. This would give the MQ a lore-friendly way to progress, and allow the player to take on a role other than Dragonborn.

Oh no, don't get me wrong... Basically I'm just after a mod that would allow you to go on with your non-DB business and interact with the world as it would be if you never slew the dragon that attacked Whiterun. EXCEPT... you still run into dragons and can use/collect Shouts. So, it'd be like you killed the dragon... but without actually doing anything to bring that part of the quest into play. Couldn't there just be a console command like, "EnableRandomDragonEncounters", "enableShouts", and "EnableShouting". Something like that. :P

BTW, very cool idea about letting someone else be the DB. I'd dig it. :)

Sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too!

Once you start killing dragons and absorbing their souls and learning shouts, you'll discover that you're the dragonborn and others will notice too. This should open up the main quest as least as an option, so why talk of disabling it? I know, it's because you want to slay dragons and learn shouts. But if you can't disable shouting and absorbing souls, then slaying dragons will reveal to your character that he or she is dragonborn.

For me, the only way I can role play with my character off doing non dragonborn stuff is by him/her not knowing of his/her destiny. My Nord, like all Nords, knows of the legend, so killing a dragon would reveal this.

Personally, I hate fighting dragons before building my character way up. There's something awful about being Dovakiin way under powered and running and hiding behind cover constantly from your destiny while taking cheap shots during a fight that last a day and ends with the dragon flying away.

I'm on my 2nd play-through now with a character that just doesn't give a ****. I have the quest from Farangar to go get the Dragon Stone, but I'm holding off on it cause I just don't care all that much. Even with how high I got my last character (57), I've still never owned a house in another city, never finished Thieve's Guild or Dark Brotherhood, haven't picked a side in the Stormclock vs Imperial fight....none of that stuff. So now I'm just gonna go through and ignore the main quest in favor of playing through everything else.

My character doesn't need Shouts or Dragon Souls to be awesome...though they are pretty neat. Especially with Tytanis mod that lets me craft more stuff out of Dragon Bones and Scales.

Crap, I might just advance the quest enough for High Hrothgar after I finish Thieve's Guild to start getting Dragon encounters.
