Pack Rat you for got about a spell called water walking

interesting... well for one thing, water walking is temporary, and costly in the way of magika, and createing CE items of water walking for the altmer military (do they even have one?) would probably drive the lil nation in to massive debt, and what would the altmer do in close combat once they used water walking to reach the ships?! absolutely nothing, especaly when the 2 main sea-fearing races are nords and imperials, and imperials are exceptional in close combat, while the nords are a terrifying sight to behold in close combat, and any altmer with half a brain would reilize that they are not built for the hack and slash of meele combat, and what if the argoinans had a go at the altmer (not likely they would, not inclined or realy able to invade) they wouldnt need boats!, just swim there, and there wouldnt be any magika to stop them if the arent seen comming.

But you Smashy forget that the Altmer are suppior mages so their water walking could last hours and barily damage their MP, plus two mages could go out at night w/ large area effecting spells, destroy all the boats in one area ( w/ great amounts of ease ) and then return to the island ITS OBVIOUS THE ALTMER WOULD WIN!!!!

There's actually some precendent to this...in the Empire's invasion if Morrowind, the elves lost Ald Marak to Prince Juliek due to his cunning field negotiation- he ordered his mages to cast a massive spell of water breathing over the entire troop. Vivec, defending Ald Marak, expected the troops to come around the lake, not under it. He also expected them to be slow, because a spy (Cassyr)'s report said that the troops were uncumbered with fine armours and would travel much slower. Cassyr mistekenly misidentified the mystics as battlemages, and, by the time Vivec realized it, the Imperial forces were already at Ald Marak, armoured in fine Daedric, Ebony, and Dwemer armour.

With several mages combining their power such as the Imperials did, they could easily overwhelm an unsuspecting force. Especially a force expecting an attack from the ground.

EDIT: Woohoo, 900th post! I need a life!

the 2 main sea-fearing races are nords and imperials

Um....Maybe I'm missing something here, but how in the world would the Imerials have a strong navy, THEY'RE landlocked. The fleets they have would be sitting in and enamy harbor if the a war started.....

The imperials would be easily defeated with their current position ing of themselves and their troops. The imperials arn mot really a seafaring race. The imperials have no ports of their own. Also the imperial army could not defeat the dunmer. The imperials had too much trouble taking morrowind and were not able to conquer it. The imperials lost many trying to conquer morrowind but faild and later formed a treaty. The imperial army is not all that powerfull. All that they really have is disciplie in their ranks which is nothing when pinned against a massive army that outnumbers you which would happen.

The Imperial army is very powerful- under Prince Juliek and the cunning tactics of the Akavir, Vivec was forced to sign the treaty.

The imperials had too much trouble taking morrowind and were not able to conquer it.

The had about as many losses as did the Dunmer. They succeded in conquoring Morrowind, which is why it was them offering the trreaty, and not the other way around.

you know absolutly nothing about comparative battle stratagy. The Altmer have super weakness to fire, frost, lightining and magicka. They barely have higher magcika than the other races. They are on an island, and therefore can easily be surrounded by ships. If they cast frost or lightning attacks against a seaferring nation like skyrim, the nords aboard the ship would be immune to both. As it is, the altmer isnt very big in numbers. when all this comes down, it will have to do with three things: 1. sheer numbers, 2. battle tactics, 3. luck. The Altmer don't have #1 and only slightly have #2. They would need #3 in super spades in order to even survive.
