Hi All,

As I have been playing and learning Skyrim this last year I have been trying out different mods in a haphazard way with Mod Organizer. I am currently in mid game and mostly pretty stable with 175 mods, but now I am getting greedy in this incredible candy store of Nexus Mods and would would like to rebuild my installed mods, both to correct a few problems and to improve the game up to a new and higher level.

So I have a few questions about doing this. I don't want to totally screw up the game I have now.

1. If I uninstall all of my mods that are in Mod Organizer and reinstall and activate the mods I want from scratch, both some of the old mods and the new mods, it seems to me that I will likely ruin my current save game files? Is this correct? Does this mean I have to begin a New Game all over?

2. Is there a way to successfully rebuild with Mod Organizer and keep my access to my current save game?

Thank you.

This is more general info than specific to MO.

I've done what you are looking to do twice in Skyrim, and God only knows how many times with other games. It's true that if you load a game without a mod, it can cause problems, but if you install and then put them back, it should be okay.

For me, I like to do things by hand, and so it was probably more painful than it needed to be. What I did was I looked at all my mods and seperated them out based on what they did. Armor mods are dead last, they aren't likely to crash your game. Worst thing that has happened to me as a result of a missing armor mod is that the gear is removed from my inventory. Your Unofficial Patches are first. In the middle are going to be what I call "utility mods". These are mods that add something to the game beyound simple gear. Things like overhauls, quest mods, and models/skeletons. So Bound Armoury, CBBE, XPMS (or whatever), Better Vampire...these sorts of things. And this is where it's ugly because of dependencies. For these, read the mod pages. For example, if you have Race Menu, Custom Races, and Better Vampires, there is an order to those that you will find on BV's mod page. CBBE and XPMS (whatever) also have an order, though I can't remember.

In theory, the order of installation DOESN'T matter, but in practice I've found it's a real pain in the ass to install them out of order. What does absolutely matter is the load order.

edit: In fact, the reason I rebuilt my mods was due to everything being all crazy and crash happy. So, it definitely can help.

Hi TTC,

Thank you for the general perspective.

I was wondering if anyone had more information about...

1) If you just install all of your 175 mods, chances are you are going to have a bad day. If you then reinstall them, it may take some time to get the load order correct, but you shouldn't need to start your game over.

I've been using the same Skyrim save since Fall 2013. Since then I have twice done what you are looking to do.

2) If you are asking about some kind of MO automation, I can't say, but I do know there is A way. Worse case scenario you do it "by hand" activating one mod at a time -- what I've done before with NMM.

NMM and MO, at the end of the day, accomplish the same task. They make sure that the stuff that gets to where it needs to be in your Skyrim/data/ folder.

edit: For perspective's sake, I have 150 plugins from 190 installed mods. Of those 4 pluggins are deactivated and only 163 mods are active. I also have a bit over 500 mods just kind of floating around (>_>). Additionally, I have some personal mods modding other mods, as well as some odds and ends of files (esp, dds, and nif mostly) that I editted or created. In other words, my Data directory is God damned mess that is well over do for some cleaning.
