skyrim locking up with 1.4

i played skyrim perfectly with patch 1.3.1. my fps was steady at 35-60 depending on the area. i downloaded patch 1.4 and my fps went up to 50-60 (Vsync blocks anything more than 60), but my game freezes and locks up every minte or so resulting in an unplayable game

it is not a mod related problem as i made a clean install in an attempt to fix it :excl:

anyone knowing what it might be, and if there is a fix except rolling back to patch 1.3.1???

my specs:

processor:amd atlon X4 635 processor ~2,90 ghz.

os: windows 70 ultimate 32 bit.

memory: 4096mb ram

gfx card. ati radeon 5870.

(adding the DxDiag in case you need more info)

Well, without digging too deep, I would say, that you should try 3 things for now:

-Verify Game Cache (through Steam)

-Defragment your HDD

-And try running it in WinXP Compatibility

I will take a closer look at the dxDiag.

Try to roll back to 1.3 if you can. 1.4 is breaking the game for many folks so you are not the only one. Everyone points to checking out their system. If the game was working fine with 1.3 and then constant crashes with 1.4 it is not the persons system but the 1.4 patch. Seems this problem has been the status quo of all the patches with the exception of 1.3. I am still using 1.3 and will continue to do so since I have almost completed the game. I will take a look at Skyrim again in about 6 months to see what has happened since the new CK is coming and I am sure many more patches. Sorry for all of you having all the problems. You can thank Bethesda for that.

i actually am. i copy/pasted the entire skyrim folder into an other directory, and ziped it like a backup. was considering to do it, but i was hoping that i could get 1.4 to work. problem is... i don't know wich files were altered by the patch

going to give 1.4 one last shot and after that.. wel, just have to check "last changed" date on EVERY file in skyrim directory and manually roll back a patch.

damn. did not work. anyone knows what to do in order to make 1.4 work?

Hehe dartmaul15 ;) You`ve tried a fresh install of the game & removed all mods. And if you also have deleted the ini files and let the game create new ones, I would says there is not much more you can do.

I guess the best fix (and quickest) is a complete OS install. That sorted out everything for me. My game was also unplayable no matter what I did. CTD, stuttering etc. I don`t have a clue what went wrong.

But after re install of windows it runs like a dream. I played 5 hours yesterday. No CTD. That hasn`t happened before with me.

So I am encouraging you to do that.

so if it does not work to reinstall skyrim then i need to reinstall win7...

are you kidding me? reinstalling windows? :excl: i got like 600gb that needs to be backed up in order to do that :excl:

if it is the only way to fix it then... well...

Sad to hear that.... I always make a partition on the harddisk only for the windows. Everything else is stored on other partitions and won`t be affected by a reinstall of windows.

Look, I`m not saying there isn`t another fix, but it could mean that you will be looking forever to find it.
