Adapting Fallout 4 mods for Fallout 3

Hey all.

There is a lot of Mods and weapons that Fallout 4 has that would be awesome if they could be ported back to Fallout 3, even in a more primitive versions. Is this possible? Has anyone taken game content from Fallout 4 and put it back into an older Fallout?

I know there was some mods that brought New Vegas content to Fallout 3 and Vice versa. But they were developed quite close together.

Is it possible? And has anyone done it?

Fallout 3 and New Vegas were basically the same game. They were built on the same engine, using pretty much the same tools, and New Vegas even reused a lot of FO3's graphical and sound assets. Porting between them was trivial compared to porting between FO3 and FO4.

What New Vegas was to FO3, Fallout 4 basically is to Skyrim, which is why you see a lot of Skyrim-to-FO4 ports. FO4 and FO3 are very different platforms, making porting script-based mods (believe me, I know) between them a gigantic pain in the ass. Weapons, armor, etc. likewise haven't been so much "ported" as recreated for FO4.

I shudder to think about the job of trying to backport Papyrus to old Gamebryo. Yikes.

If your intention is to port vanilla game content it's not allowed per Bethesda's rules anyway unless it's for personal use only. You would need to create your own version of everything including 3d models. If your intention is to port content by a mod author you need the mod author's permission unless it's for personal use only.
