I've read over numerous threads on FNV hanging on the load screen when attempting to load a save game, but haven't been able to find as much information on this particular variation of the glitch. The problem is that the same infinite loading screen occurs when trying to enter a cell that has a spawning script, whether for enemies or NPCs. I don't mean entering it on foot, I mean either going through a door, or fast traveling to it. There are a couple of locations that are especially problematic:

* Harper's Shack is supposed to occasionally spawn a handful of deathclaws if you fast travel there. In my previous games this worked fine, but in my most recent game, I get the infinite loading screen every single time this is supposed to happen.

* At the Battle for Hoover Dam in the endgame, as happened in my previous game, entering the Hoover Dam Checkpoint and then attempting to exit out the other side causes the game to hang forever. I had sided with the NCR, and recruited the Boomers, BoS, and Remnants to fight on my side. After the Boomers flew over and bombed the east side of the dam, I could not exit the Checkpoint after entering. From what I can tell, it was interfering with the spawn scripts: several NCR desert rangers are supposed to appear and offer their assistance, and shortly after the Remnants vertibird is supposed to land.

The common thread is that both of these instances involve NPCs or enemies that are supposed to spawn around the player. I don't know if one of my mods is causing the problem, but I don't have very many mods:

That "infinite loading screen" for a "save game" file is an indication of a corrupted save file. The game engine is caught in an "infinite loop" instead of crashing. Please see the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

Also suspect you might need a "merged/bash patch" file to reconcile record level conflicts between YUP and "LFox Sink Bug Fixes". At least take a look for conflicts with both loaded into FNVEdit.

Note that if "disabling" mods does not identify the culprit, then you need to uninstall them because they overwrote something "vanilla". If your mod manager doesn't actually restore the replaced vanilla files, then please read the "Mod Conflict Isolation" section of the same "Troubleshooting" guide linked above.

Thanks for the response.

I only got "LFox Sink Bug Fixes" because it makes fixes a couple of things that YUP did not. My previous game had run without a hitch with both mods. I checked them in FNVEdit and the only conflict was to The Sink (computer) as far as how much it decreases your dehydration in Hardcore. I copied the values from YUP to Sink Fixes, so there shouldn't be any conflict now.

I did finally find something that worked, which also helped me figure out what had caused the crash. I got the New Vegas REFR Deleter save game cleaner and ran it on a save made in a cell other than Harper's Shack. When I loaded the cleaned save, it worked. I found that it had reset several objects inside the shack back to their original locations, like it's supposed to do. Then it occurred to me: I had made the mistake on numerous occasions earlier of discarding unwanted objects by dropping them on the ground. That, it turns out, is a terrible idea because the game tries to save every single one of them anyway.

I guess from now on, I'd better sell useless items instead of dropping them.

You can put useless items into "corpses" (which count as "containers") in the exterior cells to get rid of them. That's actually a bit simplistic as to what is really going on, so check out the 'Issue: Corpses disappear too quickly' entry in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide for a more complete explanation of how "corpse cleanup" works.

Personally hadn't heard of "New Vegas Save Cleaner" (New Vegas REFR Deleter) previously, so thanks for mentioning it. Sounds reasonably "safe" for such a tool from the description, but lacking any knowledge about the competency of the author, I have difficulty accepting that a tool that hasn't been updated since 2013 (and even then only once) won't have potential issues with things that weren't well understood back then. But it's worth a try as long as you make backups of both the ".fos" and ",nvse" files in case things go wrong and test like crazy after I suppose.

I may have spoken too soon. After restarting my game (made a character build that was too weak) I got up to around the same point again, and the same thing happened in the same location. It's always the exterior cell of Harper's Shack, and it's always around the same point in the main quest after killing Benny and getting the platinum chip back. I can't fast travel to Harper's Shack or any nearby location (like Dead Wind Cavern) without it crashing, and I can't even exit the shack from the inside without it crashing. The timing is around the same as when the game is supposed to spawn deathclaws around you when you fast travel there.

This time the save cleaner did not solve the problem, and the problem is worse than ever. I don't know if one of my mods is causing it, or even which one it could be.

ETA: I disabled all mods except YUP and tried to travel to the exterior cell of Harper's Shack. The same thing happened, I got the infinite loading screen and then the game crashed. I have no idea what to do now.

Well, if "disabling" mods leaves the problem still present, then uninstall them. Start from a new "vanilla game" with a "throw away" test character, turn on "god mode" (console "tgm"), race up Harper's Shack and see if you still have the issue. If not, then install mods one at a time and repeat the test until you pin down which is causing the problem.

Please see the 'Restoring to "Vanilla" ' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article.
