Help! Trying to swap textures

Okay, I looked at this but I still have some questions because I'm not exactly making my own textures here; rather, I just want to swap around some already made textures.

First, I had the idea that I want Mankar Cameron's robe to look like the Mythic Dawn robe, not the Arch-mage robe style. How would I accomplish this?

Second, I saw this lovely texture for a set of leather armor. My character is high level, so downgrading to leather is not particularly practical. I got the idea that this darker leather would look great for the Morag Tong armor from the DLC Mehrune's Razor. I tried deleting the mod's esp and renaming the folders so that the textures would funtion as retextures (replacement textures for all instances of leather armor in the game), but I didn't have any luck. So, how can I take a pre-made texture and apply it to the specific set of the ingame enchanted armor?

Every mesh(3d model) is specially mapped to a 2d plane where the texture is gathered from. This is called a UV map.

Unless these robes have the same UV maps, just swaping the texture is not going to work. It's going to wrap the texture in a way that isn't what you want.

I think the only way to acomplish what you are tryin to do is to take the .dds texture file that you want, open the base .dds file of the armor you want to apply that texture to, and use some fancy image editing to copy-paste the wanted texture onto the base texture.

That... makes sense. The Mythic Dawn robes are different, since they have gloves as part of the robe. I'm not sure about the Leather armor; the mod contains meshes and textures. I'm not sure how that figures into all this.

Would you (or someone else) care to take some time to explain the steps I'll need to take to do that? And/or refer me to a thread or tutorial that could help me with these texture swaps? Thanks.

That tutorial will give you all the tools you need for your project, as well as basic instruction into what you are doing.

What you will want to do is open the .dds files for both the robe with the texture you want, and then the robe you want to apply it to. Open those in your prefered image editing program be it GIMP, Photoshop, or Paint.net.

Once you have both those open and sitting in front of you, it will become self-explanitory.

Then just use the tutorial as a reference to apply those textures to the objects.

Thanks! Okay, I downloaded the tools I need. I'm looking at the wiki, and I notice I have a problem. The instructions give an example: editing the fur cuirass and iron longsword. The instructions say to go to Oblivion\Data\et cetera. And somehow I will magically find the meshes just sitting there. Well, the only meshes in my data folder are those added/altered by mods and the unofficial patches. If I had no mods and no patches, my data folder is pretty empty. So, I can't even find .dds files for Mankar Cameron's robe. Am I supposed to find the files in the Construction Set?
