Rennn
When I wake up my computer from sleep, or whenever I power it on, there's a sort of static effect on the screen. It only happens for 15-20 seconds, and then it works perfectly until I next turn off the computer or put it into sleep mode. I can turn my monitor on and off without any static, so I doubt it's the monitor itself. It doesn't happen when playing Skyrim heavily modded, which is the most stressful game I own, so hopefully it's a not a gpu problem. It's a completely new computer with a new GTX 460, and it was fine for weeks after I installed the components, so it's not related to a loose power connector inside the case.I did buy a very cheap vga monitor, so hopefully it's something with that, since that can easily be replaced with a better one. Any ideas? Even if it's bad news? Is my gpu or cpu dying?
Rennn
Is this really unknown to everyone? Even if nobody knows what is causing it, can we at least rule out my cpu and my gpu so I can sleep tonight? I have no money to replace either of those. What are your CPU and monitor temps before, during, and after you play for awhile? This is what I use to monitor that stuff http://www.piriform.com/speccy
Rennn
Temperature can't be the problem, can it? I'll download Speccy (thx for the link), but it only happens immediately after I turn my pc on. I'll update you on the temps tomorrow, btw. It's extremely late here. More like early, really. Feanoro
Check the temps, but I doubt it has anything to do with them. If it happens from time to time in various situations it's probably the monitor, but if it only happens on wakeup then it might just be some shitty windows bug. For example sometimes when I wakeup my computer from sleep i sometimes get a pink screen for a second instead of the blue win 7 colors.
babis8142
The surest way to find the problem is to try another monitor. If you can do that with the gpu too then you'd be sure about that too but obviously you need the know-how to change the gpu. I had similar problem and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. So I used another monitor and it was still the same so it wasn't the original monitor. Edited February 4, 2012 by babis8142
Ragicka
Do you mean a CRT monitor? I had a samsung CRT a few years ago that did something like that. It had flickering horizontal lines that cleared up after 10-20 minutes but got progressively worse. Had it replaced under warranty, it eventually did the same thing. To me, it sounds like a failing monitor. A couple additional things to check: Does the static show up on a screen cap? If you gently wiggle the cable, does that have an effect at all? EDITMy cpu temperature never goes above 55c, and my video card is about 45c, even while I play Skyrim. I'd played for about two hours, and the temperatures weren't higher than that. Idling, the temps are about 40c and 35c, respectively. The fans (there are several) consistently blow cool air. It can't be heat. The monitor itself is an ASUS LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900. It cost about $100, so it's quite cheap. My guess right now would be that it's the monitor's fault. Hopefully the problme doesn't get worse for a long while. I can handle 15-20 seconds of 'static' only when I power up my pc. :/(It's not really 'static'. It's more like the pixels pull sideways in a static-like effect.) Borrowing a monitor will be simple enough. My brother happens to have a vga/dvi monitor that I'm sure he'll let me use to test this.
