SkjoldBjorn
Remember that if you want objects from skyrim, you should get your hands on blender 2.49b.There is no working nifscripts for a newer blender yet, or well it's in the alpha stages, but does not support skyrim nifs yet :(
jimhsu
I'm going to echo the importance of starting with source material. I couldn't make something worth as background scenery, much less character assets, if it weren't for taking stuff that already exists and editing the heck out of it (get permissions first though). There is a lot you can do with cutting and pasting, push/pull, deforming, etc. Even professional 3D modelers that I know start with some sort of source (even a 2D sketch) and model around that. Same applies for texturing; unless you're a master artist, Google Images will probably be your friend. If you really want to try completely free form 3D though, I'd go get ZBrush and a Wacom. 3ds Max while superb for most things, doesnt compare in terms of totally free form drawing and "intuitivity". At least that's what I hear. Edited February 4, 2012 by jimhsu
smoke2000
I'd love a tutorial from 0 to a new asset working in skyrim. Even if it was just a 3d modelled and textured cardboard box. I'm experienced with zbrushhttp://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/034/8/7/dwarf_final_by_smoke2007-d4oi922.jpghttp://th00.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2011/077/a/a/bow_concept_by_smoke2007-d3bwi26.jpghttp://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/052/9/c/minotaur_zbrush_by_smoke2007-d39zqc9.jpghttp://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/223/7/7/Davy_Jones_Zbrush4_by_Smoke2007.jpg but just the modeling really. I never really leave Zbrush , i have medium knowledge of Cinema4d, barely none in maya and 3dmax. I'm not that good when it comes to technical stuff like making it a lowpoly model that still has all the high details with UV and baking, i know bits and pieces , but a nice structured guide from Zbrush->3dpackage->skyrim would be so helpful. i'm not exactly planning on making animated stuff, but i'd already be very happy being able to create my own static assets for skyrim. My only modding experience so far in skyrim was a retexture of ohdaviing. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5679 , which I also did with Zbrush completely and photoshop to convert to correct format. I did it to familiarize myself a bit with the sort of maps the game uses and how it all works together (alpha , spec , glow , texture) Edited February 13, 2012 by smoke2000
