Haunted by ghosts of old problems

Hello all,

I could really use some help please, people. I'm just not someone who is capable with anything remotely technical.

I just spent most of the day cleaning out my hard drive and freeing up some disc space and now I find that whenever I boot up Oblivion, either through the mod manager or through the normal interface, it gets to the Bethesda logo and then just cuts out and crashes to desktop. This was the sort of thing that used to happen to me years ago...so long in fact that I haven't a clue how to go about correcting it again. Admittedly, there have been times when OB has crashed out on me in recent history but it always just re-stabilised itself up until now.

I deleted a few small files, taking care to ensure that nothing was connected to the original game files but I'm not sure if I can even remember which ones they were. I do know that one of them was 'Thievery in the Imperial City' and I specifically chose to uninstall it because it was easy to uninstall on account of the fact that the textures and meshes were all contained in a file with the same name i.e. Data->Textures->Thievery, or something similar. I did something similar with 'Damarask' but I didn't touch the Dremora folders for fear of screwing something up.

Anything else that might be a problem? Well, I installed 'PowerISO' which set up a new drive, but I only wanted to use to extract data off a CD ISO and then I immediately uninstalled it. I guess the Construction Set could have screwed something up, which I just downloaded again with a view towards checking out what I might be capable of doing with it, but I only performed the very first tutorials of the CS here: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index...inner%27s_guide .

Other than that, I haven't touched the loading order for my mods nor added any new mods since the sudden dawn of the error. I'm totally baffled!

Can anyone help?

Supposedly there is some protection against running Oblivion on a system with a virtual drive enabled. Try disabling the drive before playing. That's the first thing that came to mind. Anything else would probably be either due to improper setup of video settings, or a bad install.

I'll Help!

First things First, Disable all your esp and esms except Oblivion and SI if you have it. Then if that dont work back up your saves and reinstall it. I have found out that my OBMM changes load orders without me doing anything. Back up your text, mesh, sound and LOD folders or anything other than TEXT AND MESHES. otherwords i mean move them out of oblivion. Then make An empty texture and empty mesh folder then try it again. If that dont work try burning a copy of your disk ( its not illegal if you own an original disk) burn it normally and if there are any errors your disk is shot. If none of that works do a default video setting. and if all of that dont work back up your mods, saves and evrything else and reinstall the games mods and such. Then if that dont work buy a new computer! cause one of those things will work for you!

If its a esp or esm its conflicting.

You can always just back up your folders in your directory and do one massive reinstall in just a few clicks. Which basically means back up your Obmm Folder Data folder and OBSE if you use it. then reinstall oblivion and SI the just Merge the files like you would normally install a mod manually. THAT WILL WORK and you wont lose anything and it wont take all day. If it dont work its your disk.

Okay, nothing so drastic was needed in order to figure out the root of the problem. Basically, it's the 'Tabaxi race' mod that is causing the problem. I realised this after unticking all of the mods and then gradually checking groups of them. It soon became VERY CLEAR that it was this one that was the problem.

It may be the case that this is sort of co-dependent with another mod that uses the Tabaxi race and that somehow, by uninstalling a different mod, I may have screwed with this one. I'm not sure. Anyway, as I have commented here: http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showto...2701&st=130 , this is looking seriously dangerous for continuing with the character that I have always used in Oblivion since the start.

"When I tick the .esp for the mod it crashes as soon as it gets to the Bethesda logo but when I start without the mod it loads perfectly fine but almost all of my savegames from the past year or so are saved using the Tabaxi race as a player-character which obviously causes problems.

Yet somehow it's just stopped functioning. So, spookily, I am invisible beneath the armour even after having updated to version 15 in order to correct things. Then it crashes. Even if I try to go to the console once I'm in-game and type in 'showracemenu' then the game just crashes before I can get to it. This could seriously affect my long-term game for the character that I've always used bar none wallbash.gif down.gif . Help needed urgently!!!!"

Sorry, ignore me! I just re-installed and moved the mod up the load order and everything seems to be fine now. Weird! I thought that moving it down the load order would solve the problem...
