I know a lot of people it's gonna flame me by what I'm going to say but from my experience I would stay away from any ATI cards , they are just bad with most of new games . . . and I would suggest something like a GTX 560ti and above

Dilir , i agree the 560ti is a great and affordable card (but double the price of the card you wanted Invisible man) . you can get a good factory OC version if you want to avoid Oc-ing it yourself - almost an equal to a 570 but much cheaper. But that said I really think the whole ATI /Nvidia choice is down to what you are used too, I know lots of people who have had trouble with nvidia and an equal number who have had the same with ati. I've had both over the years and i would say driver updates are more common and easier to update with Nvidia.

ive got the MSiI version of the 560ti, frozr something - runs really really cool, let me check...right now *no games running but my pc has no fancy cooling stuff and its is at 29c.

if thats too expensive how about the 550ti ?

GTX 570 or 580

For like all games. For just skyrim...I would say the 6870 or 6950

Wow, I still run all my games. inlcuding new ones with one measly 8800 GT [PNY] and can run on high settings with 8x aa and 8x af on high quality (no FXAA and no reflect skies)

That's with Skyrim HD mod pack (lite version) @ 1680 x 1050

I'm afraid to buy or upgrade because this thing has been running all new games without problems (although some games like the Witcher 2, I can only play on low settings if I want consistent FPS w/ bloom)

What would be the successor? You know, cheap, robust, dependable and can probably last at least 4 years. I want to buy a drink to whoever designed this amazing GPU.

I'll second all that including temp being important. Although I'm with ATI right now for the same reason you're with nVidia. I've gone back and forth between the two over the years and would just add that the choice depends on the year and season because one always seems to struggle for a bit on something like hardware or drivers, then the other falls behind a few months later. The ATI card I have now is discontinued so can't recommend it, but it was the coolest, literally in temp, by far at the time. I'd also add that ATI has been updating drives a lot more frequently the last few months, though if you read what those guys on the ENB forum say about driver updates for both companies, you might consider reverting back to old drivers for any card if you want less bugs caused from "optimizations".

in the late 90s i was a nvidia fanboy till they screwed the lot of us by removing pixal & vortex shading from their drivers. that really messed up my gaming. since then i've carried the ATI flag. unless i feel like waiting for another month about $130 is the most i'll be able to shellout for a card. maybe 150 if i feel like not eating for about a week. which i have though about... so a 6950 then? i seemed to be running it fine with an ATI Radeon x-1600 (which is a 5800 for the most part).

sorry for any typos, for the last few days i've been using my laptop, and the keyboard is not all that good, not good at all,and i'm to lazy to be OCD about it right now. lol

---edit---

most of the cards mentioned in this thread are a tad out of my price range. think the 6950 will drop to aroung $150 in the next 3 or so days? lol

i might be ale to spring for a 6790 or even a 6850, but alas... that's all my wallet can take, and my sanity can't take another month without a pc.

so thanks for the replys. i found them quite helpful.
