True, even Belladonna is "natural" but I've taken Melatonin for years with no negative side effects. The "worst" that happened was I took 10 pills at once and slept hard, having really vivid dreams that night and needing 15 minutes to even open my eyes after waking up.

Felt great the rest of the day, tho.

As far as "long term studies" on Melatonin, there really doesn't need to be any. It's in your brain already. It gets released when it's dark outside, and supplementing your body's natural stores of it doesn't change your brain chemistry, it just "tricks" your brain into thinking that it's dark outside and that you should sleep. And the "LD-50" is currently "unknown". Meaning that no matter how much you take, there is no risk of overdose. The active dosage is about 3 milligrams, and researchers gave human and mouse test subjects alike over 6 grams per night. No ill side effects, other than a bit of stomach upset (which would happen from 6 grams of anything, even flour)

It is also the ONLY sleeping aid I have or ever will endorse, due to those reasons.
