Stuck On First Splash Screen, Yet Again...

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I was minding my own business with 124 plugins, was working 5 minutes earlier and then, oops, here we go again, I start it up. All seems fine, but then I just sat there staring at the main menu, only this wasn't the main menu or, it was the main menu, just without the menu. You know, the lines of of orange text were gone and there was no cursor. I validated the game files, disabled all plugins, nothin' worked. This isn't the first time that this has happened. I found that the only fix for me was reinstalling the game. Naturally, I'm willing to try anything else besides that. Try to find a better fix than uninstalling and reinstalling and all that jazz. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

"Hanging" is a "CTD" in all respects except you are caught in an infinite loop. My first thought is "are you using the game's built-in 'auto-save' feature?". If so, please see the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems ' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

Otherwise, please see the 'Checklist' and 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' sections in the same wiki article. Between them you should be able to solve your underlying problem. If not, please follow the guidelines in the wiki "How to ask for help" article.

Sounds like a "missing master" problem, which can be caused by a poorly sorted "load order". Which is just one of the reasons we ask for you to list it in the "How to ask for help" article.

As mentioned under the 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' section, you need to see the wiki "Missing Masters" article if you are actually missing one.

These are known, common problems. We can solve them but only if you provide us with the necessary information to do so. The "Troubleshooting" article linked in my first response contains or links to all these answers. Along the way you will learn more about why they occurred in the first place and be better able to avoid them in future.

Thank you. That indeed does help. But additional information we ask for in the "How to ask for help" article (and still need) is:

* Did you install Steam under the default location of the "C:\Program Files" tree? This causes many "strange" problems not otherwise explainable. As painful as it may sound, read the wiki article Installing Games on Windows Vista+ and move at least FNV. That article has a link to the official Steam Procedure (a good indication that they now recognize the need to correct this). This should be the first solution you try. Otherwise you will spend a lot of time and effort trying other solutions, and still have to move the game files in the end anyway.

* Do you have NVSE or any of it's plugins installed?

* What is your sorted "load order"?

* Do you have a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 8.1?

While I use and recommend LOOT, it is not 100% perfect. Sometimes it needs manual assistance, which is why it has "metadata" to permit you to configure it for those situations it doesn't know how to handle correctly. In addition, many files can be moved around without adverse effects, within limits as it "groups" plugins. (Always re-run LOOT after making manual adjustments to see if it objects to any of your repositionings.)

As for your issue with "missing DLLs" needed for Dependency, see 'Checklist Item #6' and 'Issue: Vanilla game Hangs on startup' "Cause-1" in the "Troubleshooting" guide.

Though FNV4GB still works, you should consider upgrading to the "FNV 4GB Patcher" (by the same authors) instead simply because it does the same things and looks like the original vanilla file to everything else. That makes it more compatible with other tools and what they expect to see where.

If you can't isolate the problem source through any other means, then you will need to uninstall all your mods and install AND TEST each one at a time. Sometimes this is the only method to pin down a conflict. See the "Mod Conflict Isolation" section of the "Troubleshooting" article.

Moving the Installation worked! It took me several hours of painstaking work, but I did it! Not without you're help, for which I am grateful. No, really, sincerely, thank you. May the internet gods smile upon us this day! So for people with the same problem, let me suggest this: Make sure any game you have is installed anywhere but the program files. Cause that might be the issue.

Also, Drugs are bad, M'kay.

And for those watching, the final lesson is: We could have gotten this result two days and 7 posts ago with all the information requested in the "How to ask for help" article in the first place. The "move it" advice is now in there as it is so basic a response.
