Offline does not work

I have a monthly internet usage limit and today I come close to reaching it (about 1GB)

I have recently became interested in Skyrim again as before I was put off by cpu limitations (big textures cause game cutout)

I realised that my cpu can handle skyrim ok on vanilla textures etc but will still have facial as the blocky faces are just "nuh-uh"

Ever since I have had NV, I ALWAYS had to connect to the internet just so I could start the game and disconnect.

Why do I have to do this?

Steam is stupid, look at my signature for instance.

Steam always starts at cpu start up so it may be that.

Can you actually get into steam at all, even with the internet on? You can then back up your Steam games and then reinstall steam, it appears the client is faulty on your PC. Once reinatlled you can then Restore the backed up Steam games. Then retest to see if you can access Steam offline.

PS. If you find you have to redownload steam to reinstall it, use this opportunity to put a copy of the installer somewhere for future instances.

yah steam is a pathetic joke... and the way they did this is ridonculous

there are options just have to do some research.

I almost did not buy this tes game even though I have bought all of them because of steam but I ended up doing it because I love their base game and I love the way the game actually gets fixed and changed by modders.

even better is the ck itself requires online activity to use it

definitely anti modding steam is

This is asked so often I have made a canned response.

How to use a Firewall to Block Steam auto updates

While Steam does try to keep you connected via internet, they actually do not force you to beyond the activation of the game. But they do not have a legitimate off line setting - they cheat and allow themselves to connect when ever they want to - even if you have set your preference to offline.

Most third party firewall programs, and those suits that have a built in firewall usually have a way to disable or block specific sites such as steam.com from being accessed by your computer or from accessing your computer. When blocked, it appears to Steam that you do not have a live internet connection - But only to that site. Every other internet site (that you allow) will work fine.

Before starting this, Be sure to go online with steam, set your preferences to off line, Then block steam using your firewall. This is easy to undo if a new patch comes out. You will be able to wait until the reviews on the new patch are out before unblocking to allow the patch. Then blocking again after it is installed.

If you don't have a third party firewall, there are many decent free and inexpensive ones available that are as good as or better than the MS firewall that is built into Win7. I am not sure if the MS firewall has this capability or not

Here is a source of quite a few firewalls - some free some are shareware or with a free trial period and some for pay. Be sure to check before you download.

This is a legitimate site that has been around for a long time. And is used by many geeks as a source for software. Think of it as like a Nexus for downloadable software. They also have an excellent section on getting rid of malware.
