doveman
My friend's thinking of getting Skyrim on the Xbox360 but I've suggested he might want to get it on PC instead because of all the mods, but he's only got a 4850 graphics card. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what mods he's likely to be able to use and still have good fps? These are the mods I'd suggest he starts with (system permitting). Should they be OK? Ygfbv
Uhh, I wouldn't even try using any texture mods on a 4850. Is it the 1GB or 512MB version? He might be able to get away with a bit if he has the 1GB version, but I doubt it.
anb2004
it can work just fine, of course assuming that your friend has good proccesor and ram as well. Even if you have the fastest gpu in the world but using ancient processor and 1 gig of memory than yes you will have beatifull graphics but will suffer huge lags... list all the hardware, so anyone here can give you better answer.. OK, I'll check with him what he's got. I think he may have got the same as I had at the time, Athlon II X4 630 and 4GB RAM, but I might be getting confused ;) Hopefully he'll be able to run the graphical mods (or some of them at least) as otherwise I think I'll have a hard time convincing him that he's better off getting the PC rather than Xbox360 version. I can see his point as he finished Oblivion on the Xbox360 whilst I've only got outside the initial dungeon, as I get appalling frame-rates even with my 6950 once I've installed a few mods and have had to restart several times whilst enabling/disabling mods to try and improve things as the savegames were incompatible, which got rather tedious so I've been playing other stuff instead. I'll get back to it sometime though!
doveman
I've been testing with my 6950 and GPU-Z reports over 1GB Dedicated VRAM being used (on High settings it got to 1114MB, on Ultra around 1458MB). This is with AA and AF off, Shadow Detail Medium, Reflect Objects and Sky off and using the suggested view settings from the STEP guide. I installed the mods in the STEP guide, but skipped any red FPS ones and only used green FPS ones, such as Skyrim HD 1.4 Lite. I note the author of the STEP guide only has a 1GB GTX 560, so does Skyrim just increase/reduce the VRAM it uses depending on what's available? doveman
Hmm, that's a shame. Just found out he's only got a 512MB 4770. So I need to get the VRAM down from just over 1GB on High to around 512MB. Any suggestions on which mods to disable? I guess the official HD DLC might be the first to go? doveman
bump anyone can help with my 6450? I did quite a bit of VRAM testing and posted the results here (post #4420), which might help you decide which mods might be OK for your card: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/456467-ini-tweaks/page__st__4410
