Bottle Combat!

So, I've actually never made a mod myself, though I'm looking to do a completely different idea once I get past finals for school, but I had a pretty simple idea that I think would change the gameplay a lot:

Bottle Combat!

The basic premise of the mod is that it would turn bottles into a melee or throwing weapon that could be used in combat. Eventually they'd break, but that's not really a big deal since they'd be pretty easy to get.

  • The first time a bottle is used as a melee weapon, it would shatter and do extra damage. It would act like a blunt weapon when you swing it.
  • Once you break it initially, it'd do a little less damage, and probably act more like a knife.
  • When thrown like a grenade, it can shatter and do damage if it hits foes, or be used to attract their attention like in The Last of Us.

That's about all I've got. But, it'd make Nuka-Cola even more useful. Aside from giving you a cap, you'd also get a weapon out of it when you drink it. Maybe you could even fill them with radioactive material so when they shatter they do rad damage...?

Any thoughts on how feasible this is?

(If someone does decide they want to make this, while I can't help much in the programming department, I can certainly make pretty headers & whatnot for the mod page since I'm an artist.)

Hey there,

I can only tell you what I'm capable of and that's not very much. I only fiddle around with object properties in FO4Edit, but I don't believe the Creation Kit would help with the issue.

The biggest problem as far as I see it is that, I don't know of any way that could make a weapon's properties like damage change during combat. You can easily make a weapon destructible, so at the most I can make a bottle break (become unusable) and cause bleed damage at the same time for example. Perhaps someone could do it by scripts, but I'm no good at that. Or at least if I had a weapon to use as a template that acts similarly...

I'm not sure whether I'll manage making bottles used as melee weapons be animated. I'll probably replace some other melee weapon with a bottle model, so they'll have the same animation.

Next, this is less of a problem and more of an inconvenience, that I can't make a junk item act like a weapon or a weapon become a junk item without using a workbench. Turning a drink into a weapon, after you drink it, seems easier though.

So if this is ok for you, write down the details, like damage, special damage type (bleed, stagger or any), crafting requirements for the radioactive bottle you want for your combat bottles ) and I'll do what I can.

EDIT: I just realized I can add explosion damage to a bottle used as a melee weapon, but I don't see any way to make it so it won't damage you as well.

Whatever seems do-able by you is cool, you've still got more experience than me! Maybe release a basic version, and put on the page that there are features that we'd want

Becoming unusable seems fine, as long as they can be scrapped/disposed of somehow. (I know regular weapons can be scrapped by being dropped on the ground in a settlement.) They'd drop glass obviously.

Replacing the animation seems fine, I think maybe the animations for the stun rods, lead pipe, pipe wrench, etc. would work best since they're already one handed and pretty small. Once again, this comes down to whatever you're capable of.

Turning a drink into a weapon after drinking it is alright! The idea of picking up junk and just using it mostly came from the idea of streamlining things. (Say you were disarmed, and it was faster to just pick up a bottle and bash people with it, or ran out of grenades and needed something to throw quickly.)

Anyway, onto the radioactive bottle details.

Damage: 20s or so (weaker than a molotov, but this isn't including rad damage, just the base damage.)

Special Damage: Between 5-10 rads per second maybe for damage? (I figure we can always play test it and tweak it if it seems OP/too weak)

Crafting:

  • Glass x2 (this is the amount you get from empty nuka-cola bottles in scrap)
  • Nuclear Material x2-4 (whatever you think is more resonable)
  • 1 Cap (How else are you going to seal it? You get one from drinking the bottle anyway)

Regular throwing bottles would be the same, minus nuclear material and the rad damage.

If there are any other details you need, just let me know! And of course, when the time comes to post things, feel free to PM me about the sort of things that are needed for the mod page (Banners, Headers, etc). I'm also plenty willing to lend a hand with testing, screenshots, and any other silly stuff that you want a second opinion on.

Thanks for the info. Does the name Rad Cocktail sound ok to you, or did you think about something else?

BTW, when you pick up any object by pressing and holding E, you can then throw it by pressing R. I suppose that will attract enemies' attention.

Sorry for the slow response, I was at a convention all weekend with shitty hotel internet.

Rad Cocktail is fine with me, I don't have anything better in mind at the moment.

Didn't think of that throwing thing, I'll have to try it out and see if it works!

I have to say sorry as well. I haven't gotten too far. I've just tested the Rad Cocktail for the first time and it does nothing it's supposed to do. It's more complicated than I thought at first, but there's a cocktail in a mod called FROST that does radiation damage. I can use that as a template. FROST is an overhaul of the game, so it adds a lot of other things, not just some grenades.

It's alright! I've finally gotten past a big hurdle of papers for school so I can afford to help test things and whatnot now. (Only one left that's due next week and partially done, yay) Go ahead and add me on steam if you want to keep in touch a bit easier about the mod, my profile is in my signature.

Yeah, FROST looks neat, just not my cup of tea. Definitely ask the creator if it can be used so that nothing is being stolen though.

Also I messed around with throwing junk around a bit in game, and realized it doesn't throw too far, but could be useful in some scenarios. Didn't get to try it around any enemies though.

EDIT: The longer R is held the farther things seem to throw. Still didn't test about the noise distracting enemies, but still handy to know.
