Oblivion-style spell / weapon handling

Dear sirs,

I've played a lot of great games, including both Oblivion and Skyrim. User interface and the inevitable 'game immaturity' bugs aside, I can say Skyrim is the better game overall.

However, the one thing that annoys me is the new inventory system, and how it handles everything from weapons to spells. While the UI is fixable (Sky UI), I have yet to see a mod that would change Skyrim's inventory system, into more or less, something like this:

While dual wielding is a welcome addition, why can't you block? Is it a game balance issue? Most of the mice we use have three buttons. I could easily see using another one for my character to form an 'X' in front of him using both swords.

Ditto for bows. In Oblivion, you could block with a bow. In Skyrim, you bash with a bow (iirc), but you can't block (I think). Can't we block using a third mouse button?

My biggest gripe with Skyrim was the way it handled spells. It handled them like weapons. Again, dual wielding spells is a nice touch, but why must I sacrifice a weapon / shield so that I can cast a spell in one / two hand/s? Why not build upon the spell-handling in Oblivion? Example, I can have a Sword, in one hand, a shield in the other, but I can still use spells regardless (perhaps with a button on the keyboard, or two). This way, I won't have to keep switching from a Bow (it's two handed, apparently) to a spell when I'm being chased by a Mountain Troll.

Personally, I thought they handled spells like weapons simply because they ran out of buttons to use on Console Controllers. Now, this are just my personal opinions and I'm not sure if everyone agrees, so I'd like to ask what everyone thinks. But still, I will ask, is there a mod out there that can do this?

Regards,

I completely support this. This is the main change I wanted to see in Skyrim from day 1. I hate the inability to cast spells just because you have something in your hand. The Spell casting mechanics from Morrowind and Oblivion were great, I don't see why the hell they would change it for this one. It just limits your character and playing style.

If I knew how I would have made this mod a long time ago, though the only fix I could think of is adding a dedicated spell casting key, like the shout key. Also that would go great with a "spell only" favorites menu, maybe Shift-1, 2, 3, ect...

If somebody could make a mod like this, I would provide you with cake...that's not a lie.

I'm still looking into mod making. I have no previous experience, however.

What I'm trying to do, or at least, envision, is a macro key of sorts. Technically speaking, it might be less difficult than creating a full-blown mod. The key, or whatever button you assign it to, simply does MORE than one function.

Example: On key press, say, G for right hand, and H for left hand, the player character will automatically *switch* to the spells (I have no idea how to set/bind said spells) and fire / charge them. He can use either or both. The player can also either hold down the keys, or tap them.

Once the user lets go of the keys, he fires whatever spell he charged, or simply stops using a continuous spell (like Spark), and immediately switches back to his weapons.

While it doesn't solve the inability to block while dual-wielding and while using a bow, I think this is a cheap work around to the current problem.

What do you guys think?

Or we can make it so that you can have both your hands full and still be able to cast magic. In Oblivion, I could have my sword out to attack, my shield out to block and healing/fireball to heal my wounds/hit my enemy from a distance. Maybe we could make it so that shouts and spells could be used on the same button? That would mean you'd have to select either a shout or a spell and not both but it would help if you had two hands full and you need to cast a spell.

Yes, this is a good idea.

I'm going to try my hand at the creation kit. Hopefully I can do something, if not something well. I'll be updating this thread as I go.
