Can't wait to this abomination in-game -- it's looking great so far!

Have you given much thought yet to its combat abilities in-game? I think it should definitely have some kind of powerful magicka drain attack, in keeping with its original lore of basically rendering void magic in its vicinity. Also a high magic resist. Would make these buggers one helluva tough fight for mage characters, but your Keepers of the Veil might have researched and be able to teach spells and abilities specifically intended to counter these creatures. For example, a very low-magicka spell that does high damage, but only works against aberrations; coupled with the beholder's magicka drain and magic resist, you could balance this to have similar power as the vanilla destruction spells. Add in a keyword conditional that runs on the target to ensure the spell can affect only aberrations (create a new keyword for aberrations, of course), and you're golden.

Hmhm~ I like this, I do! But have you considered the Vigils of Stendarr? They're a faction already in game, really easy to miss. They're focused on fighting undead and Daedra and such.. So they'd be a fitting, already-in-game version of your "Keepers of the Veil". Though I could understand not wanting to tamper with in-game stuff.. Though the Vigils are completely unfleshed out, they're just there really.. Random bandit fodder and such! The only nice thing about them is they can bless you, I believe.

But anyways, this looks wonderful, your goals should all be reachable with some good, hard work! Can't wait to see where this goes, would be willing to help with testing or other little things. I'm nothing special with the Creation Kit or nothin', but if you ever need some simple but incredibly boring and repetitive work done, I should be capable of doing that so you don't end up tearing your hair out in boredom.

That thing looks creepy enough without textures. Where do they hang out in D&D? Underground? Adding a few to Blackreach would be good, 'cause that place is so pretty and ethereal that it would make a cool contrast.

Beholders in D&D hang out wherever they want to -- they are, after all, the superior beings!

That said, they do seem to want to hang out in caves an awful lot...

That's actually a really good idea, and I second this!

Oh this brings me back to bauldurs gate and the days where the AD&D was popular. The sect or Brotherhood should have blind worshippers too..or say..people who don't have eyes at all? And you need voice actors that know how to sound insane. Great project, animating the eye-tentacles will probably take some time though. :)

Oh right, voices too! I guess I can try helping with that too, I just wanna help so much! Bwuaha.. Anywho, yeah, I'm mostly useless. Ideas and suggestions, brainstorming how to go about things, plausibly voice acting depending on if someone thinks my voice(s) are any good and my mic is quality enough... Ah well, I know how to add new items, spells, enchantments, apply the enchantments to equipment and then add them to the loot lists.. Which is all easy, really, just tedious and repetitive. What I don't have is /ANY/ photoshop or 3D modelling skills, ooooh no. Oh! I can also proof read things! Imagine that, someone capable of reading!

Wow, thanks for the many encouraging replies! That really pushes my motivation (not that has to be pushed at the moment...). Unfortunately I have no time to work on the Beholder this weekend, but expect an update on Tuesday. I hope that I can finish the texture map till then.

Regarding your suggestions:

- The Vigilants of Stendarr might be a good idea indeed. I encountered one of them in Skyrim already but it did not occur to me when I was thinking about the modification, so thanks for the hint. I will do some research on this so I can tie the beholder to an existing organisation. I think that's a great a way to make sure it does not completely fall out of the existing lore.

- Voices: I already thought about this as text only conversation is somewhat lame. I also did some research on how to warp a voice so it sounds more monstrous. That's actually the easy part, I guess. What I am not so sure about are the facial animations. While I wouldn't care whether or not it's completely lip-synchronous, I don't have any animation experiences, so I really cannot judge íf I can get the rigging right for this. But then I didn't have any modelling skills worth mentioning before I started this mod either... (www.cgcookie.com FTW!)

- Worshippers with no eyes! That's brilliant! I imagine an old blindfolded beggar who is actually the head of the cult. When the blindfold is removed, you see that he actually does not have eyes at all (not even eyeholes, i.e.).

- Mindflayers: Be patient on that one. I would really love to create them as well - but let's focus on one thing for now ;)
