Right, almost since day one I was thinking of making a mod centered around duel casting different spells to create altogether new spells. Unfortunately, now that the creation kit is out, Bethesda is talking about maybe doing a similar dlc. So I'm wondering if it would still be worth while to make my mod. Let me give you a few more details and then you guys can tell me what bits you like (if any).

  • Cast two spells to create a new spell based on semi-predictable rules (for example ice and fire always result in earth, lightning + fire = plasma and lightning + ice = force).
  • Learn a new spell as a normal spell after duel casting it enough times.
  • Create a new perk tree based for combo spells (If you have a suggestion for which trees to combine to make the space I'm all ears, lock picking + pickpocket seem popular, so choosing something else might be a good idea).
  • Individual spells get better as you cast them more (if you've played Tales of Vesperia I was hoping to do something similar to that, instead of using simple numerical increases).
  • Slotted gloves and tokens that allow you to modify spells cast from the corresponding hand.
  • New "Armors" that don't actually add to armor (so they'll work with magic armor) but give other benefits (like spell resistance or increased carry capacity) without being enchanted (This is mainly to give pure mages a reason to use smithing).
  • A quest line to tie all that together; with possible sequels if it's popular enough.

I'd be happy to answer any questions on this or go into greater detail if something interests people and any thoughts on my plans would be greatly appreciated.

I think something quite simple would be nice to start out with, say... casting frenzy and calm would cause paralysis, or something like that. :D

I'll definitely be starting with the spells before everything else and I rather like the idea of calm and frenzy combining to create paralysis.

That said, I don't really want the new spells to be variations on colored lights, so I don't think to many spells will be that simple.

For the whole Smithing area, you could probably use WOW's approach. Killing people makes them drop cloths that you use to make armor with.

Given all the vendor trash in oblivion, I don't think materials will be a problem. Off the top of my head there's linen, soul-gem fragments, leather, leather strips, gems and metals.
