Explanation on collision meshes.

So I created a new weapon, a collection of nifskoped grenades meant to look like it was made in the remnants of someones garage. For the most part it works well, the weapon and grenade functionality I got to work fine, its just that once you drop the weapon, because it does not have a collision mesh it just floats there and you cannot interact with it. After doing some research I saw tools exist for things such as 3DS max 2013, but I cannot find a copy of 3DS max dating back that far for any student use. My question is this then, how do I go about adding a collision mesh to my item in question so I can drop it and have it work just fine? Not looking for anything too fancy or accurate, just enough so you can drop it.
