Therapy77
Hi! I just realised that in a lot of cases when I'm in a shop or some person's bedroom or whatever, I can just take some (pricey) stuff instead of "steal" it. I can walk up some salesman and snatch away something from their desk without getting chased. It's kind of random because some items do show up red and others don't... That's not right, is it? Is it a known bug? Has anyone else experienced the same thing? Edited February 12, 2012 by Therapy77
NoobusExtremus
If you chat up some people, they get to know you, and like you. People who like you will let you take some things. If it doesn't show up in red and say "steal", you're free to take it if you want. Aren't friends great?

I don't know, it just seems weird that for example I walk into the weapon/armor store in Whiterun and I can just take some armor and weapons off the shelves. I haven't done anything for the guy yet. I did bring a sword to the Jarl for his smith but meh. Maybe it has something to do with me being a Nord? Skyrim people seem to be nicer to their kinsmen. NoAardvarksAllowed
The more they like you, the more expensive things they'll let you grab. And then you can sell it back to them, even though that seems a bit ungrateful... It works the same way with peoples' homes and other places. You are, after all, the Dragonborn. Handofbane
Many NPCs have a "Friendly" flag associated with the completion of specific quests, activation of that flag lets you take certain things from them. And yes it is awfully silly that you can make a delivery for a blacksmith that takes all of 2 minutes of walking to complete, then walk into their store, swipe half the armor on the shelves, then sell it back to her husband without him even saying anything about it. What's even more silly, if you pay attention you will notice every item in Dragonsreach is flagged so it would be stolen if you pick it up, but that flag is removed from most of them the moment you speak to the Jarl about Helgen. Really just making up some story about a dragon will let you rob his castle blind without repercussions....
GoodfellowGoodspring
Bethesda said something about friends you make (which wouldnt be all NPCs seeing not all are quest givers) let you sleep in their house and take things from there house etc, is this all hidden then? Because i would have liked to see some dialogue notification, its not like you make a friend then you can automatically take their stuff you would still need to ask! -_-
Handofbane
About the only real cue you have that something has changed and the NPCs will consider you a "friend", aside from checking what goodies in their homes you can pilfer, is that when greeting them in conversation or walking nearby, they will greet you with "Good to see you, friend" or something similar. Beyond that, it is pretty much a hidden deal, they do not come up and say "Hey, I like you so you can take anything you want from me and mess up my bedroom at your leisure!"
