Why is it called Vanilla?

Just wondering why the game is called vanilla until its modified? Who came up with this?

Because Vanilla is usually the default flavour of ice cream - when you get plain ice cream its usually vanilla flavoured as its not too pungeant (?) but still gives it a mild taste.

Therefore vanilla is usually the bog standard, the default of something, so an unmodded game is called vanilla.

i wondering the same question with OP, since when this terms came?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla_software

Vanilla software is computer software that is not customized from its delivered form - i.e. it is used without any customizations applied to it. Vanilla software can become a widespread de factoindustry standard, widely used by businesses and individuals. The term comes from the traditional standard flavor of ice cream, vanilla flavor.

The term 'vanilla' is often used to describe the original version of a game, that has not been modified with third-party addons, nor developer updates. It can also refer to the original game engine whensource ports or expansion packs are available.

A vanilla kernel refers to a kernel that has been unmodified by any third party source. This typically applies to Unix based kernels.

This comes from the misconception that actual vanilla ice cream is white like you see in the United States...and this is wrong, because actual ice cream made with vanilla beans is yellowish/creamish with black spots. That white goo sold as "vanilla" is just nearly tasteless Industrial crap...and therefore = plain.
