How do I place items into wardrobes, chests, npc inventory etc again?

I used to be able to give items to npcs and followers and to put items into wardrobes, chests, etc almost any container. I've downloaded a few mods for the game since then and haven't been able to do this anymore. I've tried uninstalling all the mods that had to do with containers and modding npcs but no luck so far. Any ideas on how to do this besides reinstalling the game?
