Need help, can you actually mod the mesh of the viper (starting armor)?

Okay, I can't for the life of me make any change to the viper armor mesh in-game what so ever. I've tried editing all the iterations of it that I can find in the uncooked files, including:

 

Uncooked\characters\models\geralt\armor\armor_viper\t_01_mg__viper.w2mesh

Uncooked\characters\models\geralt\armor\armor_viper\t_01a_mg__viper.w2mesh

Uncooked\dlc\ep1\data\characters\models\geralt\armor\armor_viper_v2\t_01_mg__viper_v2.w2mesh

Uncooked\dlc\ep1\data\characters\models\geralt\armor\armor_viper_v2\t_01a_mg__viper_v2.w2mesh

 

I've used the full file directory when importing the fbx back to w2mesh, and made sure the mesh is correctly weighted, is with the armature, and with xml file.

 

And yet, nothing. Where the hell is the vanilla mesh it's still using in game? I've tried stripping Geralt to just the viper torso armor, no change. I've also noted how there are no mesh mods for the viper armor on the nexus. (could it be it simply cannot be modded for some arbitrary reason?)

 

If anyone could shed some light, or have a look and see if they can get it working, I have the files on dropbox.
