before I choose...is the 'Siding-with-stormcloaks' still buggy

Hi,

Staring Skyrim SSE for the 2nd time (prior played regular Skyrim once)

First time I played (regular) I choose Stormcloaks...many broken elements of Civil War & obtaining Windhelm home quests ensued...at the time folks on these very boards noted Stormcloak choice to be very buggy..a 'known thing'... and NOT a result if one sided with the imperials

Second time I played (1st with SSE) I choose Imperials...all went perfectly

Now on this new go-around (which is 2nd time with SSE) I would PREFER to choose Stormcloaks for a different experience

So my question is, specifically for SSE -- are buggy/broken quests an invariable result if I make that Stormcloack choice?

...or do i have a reasonable chance of completing the Civil war with the Stormcloaks?

thanks

As an aside, it is a thrill to be a Skyrim weakling;level 5 after 2 sessions, every book is new to me,every trainer is new, every ingredient is new...Hell, I just disenchanted my 1st weapon & ring!

Of course I suck in battle...you wouldn't want to be in a foxhole with Me!

That depends. If you're playing the game without any mods whatsoever then yes, it will still be buggy. Bethesda didn't feel like fixing all the bugs and glitches when they released the game for some reason. Luckily, Arthmoor did their job for them and released the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch which fixes pretty much all the bugs in the game. I suggest you give it a try if you haven't already, it's pretty much essential to have.

Thank you...and yes I play with mods ('Thats what she said!', to quote from 'The Office')

I THINK I have USSEP installed already, but at work today,so will double-check when I return home tomorrow

And based on your confirmatory answer, I WILL side with the Stormcloaks this time (unless I receive subsequent replies to the opposite)

No reason not to try new things; just last nite, I decided to 'save' the redguard woman',rather than rat on her like last go-around.

and speaking of different things...I never realized that Belethor was a Breton! I missed that prior go-arounds :-)

  • 3 weeks later...

6/15 eve update,

For the record, I just (today) was able to complete the Purchase of my WIndhelm Hjerim home...even affter choosing the notoriously buggy 'siding-with-the-stormcloaks) option for the civil war

First completed Blood on the ice quest

then completed (enough of the) civil war quest

Then bought the Hjerim home

One thing happened that might explain the 'bugged-out' phenomena some experience in this quest.

Many have written (including myself a year ago on Oldrim) of the inability to get the dialogue from Jorleif to purchase the home- he simply doesn't talk to you after a certain point.

Well at a certain point, you need to follow the blood trail leading to your Hjerim's door. The dialogue in the quest does NOT make this clear.

Once you walk up to the door of your home, only THEN will the dialogue with Jorleif continue

So it might be that some interpreted this as a broken quest (and in turn called the stormcloak siding buggy) when the real issue is following the blood trail to hjerim's door

You'll probably still run into some bugs even with the USSEP. None of them are unfixable though. I recently won the Civil War for the Stormcloaks (and I also used Civil War Aftermath, very recommended to get rid of the stupid essential legates in the Imperial camps), and I ran into three types of bugs:

1) The "reporting in" option didn't show up. To fix it, fast travel to the encampment where you're supposed to get the new quest from Galmar.

2) Combat music after some battles didn't stop. To fix it, hand in the quest (thereby completing it).

3) One Imperial soldier gets away after a battle. Hunt him down. Follow the red dot on the compass until you find him. Use tcl and tgm for fastest results and to stop him from running. Sometimes they teleport though, which makes it harder to find them, plus they might be invisible. Fus Ro Dah or other AoE shouts/spells are your friend here.

I didn't have any problems obtaining any of the houses, although I only ever first entered an enemy hold when I was assigned to liberate it. So I never met the Imperial thanes in any of the holds except Solitude because Elisif stays.
