krusteh
I am playing skyrim with a illusionist thief character. the only draw back is that most of the spells scale poorly if at all despite the perks. The other issue is the lack of spells when compared to say oblivion. In that game you had spells which would influence speech and barter situations for example. Why the did not do so this time around I am unsure. The illusion spells are too much all or nothing as they stand. They either can almost completely negate an encounter, or be absolutely useless. It would have been nice if there was always some chance of success, and it scaled with ones level of skill and perks chosen, and the level of the target. Then it would never be an all or nothing affair. It would have been nice, for example, to have a spell which would make the target act as a follower for a short period of time....where you could direct the player to attack others or take actions. This would have been fitting for the vampire calm spell...where you could ask the npc to take a nap...then feed. this, I would invision, as being a higher level spell than charm or frenzy due the increased control you would have over the character. It also would have been nice to have some sort of distraction spell.....the illusion of another character, or a double or a sound that either could be used to distract guards from their position. A spell which doubled your own persona to divide attackers between yourself and the image of you would have been neat as well. The illusion class also levels extremely slowly...for obvious reasons. the best way of doing so is always having a follower whom you can cast courage or rally on. So much that could have been done that wasn't. anyway maybe a modder can create those types of spells.
TimF
Illusion spells can be effectively used against any target till the very end - 70+ levels. Their only drawback is that offensive illusion magic is useless vs dragons. You can distract enemies by shooting arrows and a special shout btw.
