So what did the Skyrim official HD textures actually improve?

Are you sure they are 1024x1024?

Yes they are. Most of the default vanilla textures were 512x512, the resolution depends on the object though, big objects had 1024^2 resolution, while smaller objects had 512^2 or 256^2 resolution.

All of the HD pack textures are at minimum, double the resolution of vanilla. The Rueful Axe is 4096^2 for example. Take in account that 4k textures are crazy big. 20Mb for a 4k texture retex that i did for masser (DXT3 wich is pretty common for any game that uses the alpha channel for some shader).

The thing is that you dont notice it cuz there is no change in art at all. Its exactly the same texture, with the same design, with the same shades, colours, everything, exept that it has higher resolution.

Thats why you dont notice it much. They dont add details, or special stuff, just everything looks more defined. It would be like an ultra setting for the Textures.

1k textures is pretty high though. For example, most of Crysis textures were 1k big. It was one of the first games to go that high. The Witcher 2 has 2k/4k textures if im not mistaken, and while W2 worlds arent big, the ammount of detail CD Projekt puts on every scene is crazy. And those are two very particular examples of graphical demanding games.

That said, for a PC game release, 1k textures are pretty standard. Even if its a multi platform game, and Skyrim doesnt seems to be very efficient while dealing with vRAM for some reason since it lacks particularly complex scenes and particularly high res textures, nevertheless the vRAM usage ramps up anyway. Probably the fault of the underdeveloped LOD system that it has, like 747823 explained in its epic skyrim fails list :P The game lacks several stage LOD system for anything that isnt trees or land. Its always 3 levels of LOD for land, one or two for threes, and one for buildings. Usually devs employ different LODs for everything, textures (through mipmapping), animations (less complex animations for distant objects) and low poly meshes. If you can make a system with 3 or more stages, popping becomes much less noticeable, lowers ram and vram usage, makes possible for the game to have very complex things that are close to you, etc.

I find it funny that Beth is calling it an HD pack.

Most textures were increased by twice as much. (Which isn't a lot) 524x524 ran rampant everyone in vanilla, now they're 1048x1048. ~That's not bad, but they're not HD.

I don't think they are calling it "HD." AFAICT, that's the moniker that a million and one forum users have given it :)

"High Resolution Texture Pack"

Of course, one might argue that "High" is subjective and maybe it should be called the Higher Resolution Texture Pack
