Virus Protection

Recommended Posts

Game plugins can't as a general rule be infected.

A virus or trojan can be put into an installer version, a dll (like for NVSE), occasionally other things. But that is usually deliberate.

Install MS Security Essentials on your new PC.

Almost nobody here will not try to give you a virus  . If a shady file is uploaded you can usually tell by the fact there is no real description, the 'modder' joined in the past few days and the files types are not standard for the game. There are few mods that contain a .exe which do not have a lot of endorsements. The last virus I remember being on tesnexus was called "runescape auto walker'. Needless to say it was removed quickly and easily picked out  .

Generally most files here are safe. I would however avoid opening anything that is in a .exe format, or has packed .dll files and isn't a verified tool. Even if something is infected, downloading it won't trigger the virus (unless downloading from some mirror site) so you can always pass it through your own local scanner (AVG, Comodo, Avast) or through a web scanner like Virus Total.

When in doubt, look through file comments and see what else that author has made. If there are no comments, and the author is a newer member, or has no other uploads, you should be cautious about using the mod without passing it through a few scanners.

I use malwarebytes, spybot, adaware, ccleaner (for cleaning registry and junk files) all are free programs, and I keep windows security essentials updated ASAP, and I get very little problems with viruses/malware. I don't even have an official antivirus program installed. And Windows 7 is way more secure than vista or XP. Most people don't realize that Windows Security Essentials do a very good job now, and it used to not be like that. If you are paying premiums for antivirus like Mcaffe, norton, etc you are wasting your money and your PC isn't any more secure. If you absolutely have to have an antivirus, get Avast, its free.
