Skyrim Publishing Inc.

Howdy,

I've been involved in writing and publishing for a long time. I've worked in a number of critique groups, have worked as an editor and researcher at publishers, and have had my own work published. Now I want to bring that experience into the land of Skyrim by producing a fan-made magazine written for, and published in Skyrim. Calling all Skyrim fanfic writers, Skyrim Publishing Inc. is now open for submissions.

The idea:

+ Published IN Skyrim

Rather than buying a paper magazine, or reading the stories online, players will be able to read the magazine IN SKYRIM, where it will be published. Players will be able to buy them at bookstores (including a special shop), find them in dungeons, and and read them wherever they want. You could even dedicate a bookshelf in your home to the magazine.

+ Looking for good Elder Scrolls fanfic

It doesn't have to be about Skyrim, but it does have to be about something or someone in the Elder Scrolls lore-world. I would prefer that it not be a story about Dovahkin, simply because it doesn't make a lot of sense for a player to be reading about what their character did... but didn't... do. Plus, for those that haven't finished the storylines, you could be spoiling the tale. It also needs to be quality fanfiction. You can submit your work to me at [email protected] . If I think your story is good enough, then I'll publish it in the mod. If I think it's good, but needs some work, I'll send it back to you with some suggestions. If I really don't like it, I won't take it. I'll be running this thing as a real publication.

+ The length

All stories must be short-stories. By "short-stories" I'm using the classical definition, which means between 1k and 20k words. If you want to submit an entire novel, I'd honestly suggest that you submit it somewhere else so that you can earn some money for your hard work. :-)

+ Series

What I would love to see are some series. Series are even better than standalone short stories, because players can anticipate the next mod update just because they know that their favorite series will appear in the game. Plus, it could add some fun treasure-hunting if the player wants to collect every version.

+ Editions

Rather than publishing the magazine online, each update on Steam Workshop and the Nexus will contain the next edition of the magazine. I hope to have at least 10 new stories for each edition. Players will be able to either find and buy the stories by themselves like you would any other book in Skyrim, or buy the whole issue in bulk from a special bookstore.

Submitting your work:

If you would like to submit a piece of work to Skyrim Publishing Inc., e-mail me at [email protected]. Please include your return e-mail address, the name you prefer your work to be credited to, the word count, and the story itself. If I want to publish it, then I will e-mail you back with an acceptance letter and your work will be included in the next update.

How to help:

If you would like to help out, but are not a fiction writer, then there are a number of ways that you can help.

* First, Skyrim Publishing Inc. is going to need a shop. Which means a level will need to be built and added to the game.

* Second, you could create a website for Skyrim Publishers Inc. It can be a blog, or a full-blown website; just something that people can go to to learn about the project and get involved.

* Third, you could create unique book covers for each publication. This would add a neat touch to the mod, giving it some personality.

* Fourth, you could volunteer for some voice recording. A unique character is going to be added to the game that will need his own voice. MUST BE MALE and have an EASLIY UNDERSTOOD accent.

To take a look at an example work, go to this mod at the Steam Workshop:

This book is an example of the type of content that I would like to add to the game, and publish in Skyrim Publishing Inc.

Of course you can count me in =) I just can't promise to be available around May and June as I'll have to focus mainly on some work due by then. I have over 20 books written so far and some more to write down.

Since I was working on the Extended Book mod I wonder if a merging would be interesting or if they should keep set apart?

Also regarding nicknames I guess it's better for the authors to become one of several Tamriel characters and just use the names of their character (which should fit with the race ect of course). It can be very fun because they can even write under cover time to time or so, like Marobar Sul who was in fact Gor Felim... We can throw in lies like they are truths time to time or what...

Im no writer but Im a reader! Bring it on.

Wow, an enthusiastic reader! You're a gem for sure! If you're interested in TES books you can see a preview of Extended Books Mod (EBM) here and read some of the books contained in the mod here (they are pdf).

EBM also aims to add more book textures to make the already existing TES books more unique for some of them. My wonder goes to whether people would prefer to install only one mod that covers everything about books or if they'd rather install numerous mods even if managing them may get a bit more tricky? Maybe we should make a poll?

And thanks very much for the link, looks like we have to get there and shake everybody like "Dudes! Y u no seen mah topic??!1"

Great to have the support!

As far as nicknames, I definitely agree. I'll let them use their username or real name if they want me to, though, simply because some people want to be published under a name that others will recognize. It would be cool if they could be published under lore character, though. We might even be able to add the character to the game and let the player talk with them about their books. :D

Thank you scrivener for the support and the link! I'll definitely take a look at and get involved in the Druids Garden. :-)

A merge of the mods would definitely be awesome! From my experience, people prefer to download one larger mod, rather than multiple mods. Plus, that way we'd know for sure that the mods would not conflict. I'll take a look at your EBM mod. From what I've seen of your writing, it'd fit in quite well with the Elder Scrolls world. :-)

I've gotta get to work on real life stuff, but I'll get back to reading your posts, work, and thinking about the mod later today. Btw, I just checked my e-mail. I've already received a submission. :-)

This is not related to the technical and planning aspects of the mod, but I'd greatly suggest finding a copy of the Sagas of Icelanders, if possible. They are very expensive and fairly hard to find, but if you live in a city, then you might be able to find a copy at a library.

Sagas of Icelanders are REAL Nordic sagas. They are the folk-stories, legends, and histories of the Icelandic people and their Norwegian ancestors. The style is very different from modern English writing. They were written very simply so that that they could be sung and memorized by children. The Bethesda writers, from what I've seen, have actually followed their form fairly well. It would be educational for any Skyrim readers, if they can get their hands on a volume. They won't learn anything about ES lore, but they'll learn a lot about real Nordic culture, and the Nordic writing style.

Here's the website for the series: http://www.sagas.is/
