All my swords in a new mod are rotated 90 degrees in the default view, so you're pretty much looking along the blade from the tip towards the handle. After some eyeball-compare of the nodes in it and other sword meshes in the vanilla game, it turns out that a BSInvMarker node solves the view angle problem by telling the game what rotation and distance to use.
