Having trouble with a custom texture

I'm trying to make a custom texture for the Whiterun Guard's Armor and the texture is not appearing exactly like the original is. All I did was recolor the original texture. I have included screenshots to show what happens.

 

Did I save the .dds wrong? Does anyone have an idea as to what I did wrong?

EDIT: Figured it out! Since I had colors on the parts outside the texture definition it tried to extend the texture.
