Oblivion: Skipable Tutorial + Starting City Option or Alternate Start ?

I have only ever used the Alternative Beginnings mod by Arthmoor, the equivalent of Alternate Start - Live Another Life for Skyrim, and have not had any issues at all. It is quite nice, actually, allows for selecting a starting city or an inn, or a bandit start or a vampire one and whatever, and also has a custom "squire at Geldall Septim's manor" option where (spoiler)

the player (almost) witnesses the death of one of Uriel Septim's children even! A true alternative start indeed, like the same start but not in the dungeon.

And no, I have not noticed any incompatibilities at all, everything works. The initial short character setup takes place in a small custom room in what seems to be the Imperial City Dungeon, after which the player can select a starting option by activating a statue and picking from a list, and then sleep in a bedroll to begin that starting option. Definitely a great mod.

But then again, I have never actually tried any of the other alternative start mods. Hopefully someone else can give you opinions on those. :P

No problem.

You can use Wrye Bash to install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch and others, too. It might even help, actually, if the UOP gets updated again at some point. Indeed, I cannot remember when, exactly, but the UOP did actually receive an update not too long ago.

Wrye Bash is actually quite easy for a beginner. People say it is confusing and whatnot, but all the things in the UI have been named in a quite self-explanatory way and it is easy to get to know the tool by browsing around the tabs and menus. The main ones are the "installers", "load order" and "saves" tabs. The installers tab is used for installing/uninstalling mods (and supports drag-and-drop load order management), the load order tab is used for managing load order for esp/esm files (and for rebuilding the Bashed Patch when necessary, by right-clicking the Bashed Patch.esp) and it also supports drag-and-drop ordering. The savegames tab is for keeping track of savegames, and for some minor editing and stuff. Right-click context menu is also very populated everywhere in Wrye Bash, so you can find a lot of things there. WB does not have much buttons, the things are in context menus and the context menu depends on the element you right-click in the UI.

If I were new to modding and had to choose a mod manager, I would definitely pick Wrye Bash. The OBMM UI is so awkward, limited and definitely not intuitive. In my opinion, that is. And you will need Wrye Bash anyway for the Bashed Patch.
